Comedian Kyle Grooms to Perform at Illinois Wesleyan
October 14, 2005
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan University’s Office of Student Activities will
bring standup comedian Kyle Grooms to campus on Friday, October 28, at 8 p.m. in the
Hansen Student Center (300 Beecher St., Bloomington).
The event is free and open to the public.
Grooms, whose comedy crosses many ethnic and social boundaries and gives an intimate
look into the experience of growing up in the American melting pot, first became interested
in comedy at age nine. Often left home alone, Grooms would listen to Richard Pryor
comedy albums and repeat the jokes from the albums to his friends, who later voted
him “Most Humorous” in his eighth grade yearbook.
An avid graffiti artist, Grooms first decided to attend the Art Institute of Fort
Lauderdale to pursue a career in commercial art. After graduation, he worked as an
art director for a Hispanic television network, but later quit in order to pursue
a career in comedy.
Grooms’ television and radio credits include HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam, Comedy Central’s
“Chappelle Show,” “Comedy Picante,” and “Premium Blend.” Grooms also has worked as
a writer and actor for Comedy Central’s “Straight Plan for the Gay Man.”
