Willy Porter Returns to IWU's Blue Moon Coffeehouse

Aug. 19, 2005

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan University's Blue Moon Coffeehouse will open its 14th season with the return of Willy Porter on Saturday, Sept. 3 in the Memorial Center's Main Lounge (104 University St., Bloomington). The concert, which is free and open to the public, begins at 8 p.m, with doors opening at 7:30 p.m.

For approximately 15 years, Porter has entertained audiences across the United States and Europe with an act described as a combination of acoustic “technical wizardry” and “gruff, story-teller-next-door vocals.” The Milwaukee native, who also tours in his own right, has opened for Tori Amos, Paul Simon, guitarist Jeff Beck (where he received a standing ovation) and, this year, for Grammy Award-winning guitarist Eric Johnson.

Though Porter has released four studio albums and one live CD, critics have said that his “unassuming, user-friendly stage presence” and quick sense of humor are best enjoyed at a live performance. Engaging the audience in the show, Porter often takes requests and solicits suggestions for themes to incorporate into a song that he improvises on stage.
