Illinois Wesleyan's Hansen Student Center Wins Architecture Award

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Hansen Student Center at Illinois Wesleyan University was
recognized by the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) as a winner of
an ACUI Facility Design Award during the organization's annual meeting in Reno, Nev.,
Completed in January 2002, the Hansen Student Center was created from historic Memorial
Gymnasium, a campus landmark from the 1920s. The 33,000-square-foot facility houses
offices for Student Senate and student organizations, student conference rooms, the
Campus Bookstore, Hattie's Cafe, Tommy's Grille and patio, and a convenience shop.
Designed by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott, a Boston architectural firm, Hansen
Student Center was one of eight facilities honored by the ACUI.
The ACUI Facility Design Awards were created to encourage excellence in the design
of student-centered facilities that support campus community building and student
learning. Awards may be given in four budget categories for new buildings, additions,
renovations, restorations, outdoor environments, interior dining environments, interior
or exterior recreation environments, and interior design and refurbishing.
