Illinois Wesleyan's Hansen Student Center Wins Architecture Award

April 18, 2005

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Hansen Student Center at Illinois Wesleyan University was recognized by the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) as a winner of an ACUI Facility Design Award during the organization's annual meeting in Reno, Nev., in March.

Completed in January 2002, the Hansen Student Center was created from historic Memorial Gymnasium, a campus landmark from the 1920s. The 33,000-square-foot facility houses offices for Student Senate and student organizations, student conference rooms, the Campus Bookstore, Hattie's Cafe, Tommy's Grille and patio, and a convenience shop.

Designed by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott, a Boston architectural firm, Hansen Student Center was one of eight facilities honored by the ACUI.

The ACUI Facility Design Awards were created to encourage excellence in the design of student-centered facilities that support campus community building and student learning. Awards may be given in four budget categories for new buildings, additions, renovations, restorations, outdoor environments, interior dining environments, interior or exterior recreation environments, and interior design and refurbishing.
