Assistant Professor in Music Education


POSITION: The School of Music at Illinois Wesleyan University invites applications for a tenure-line position in Music Education and Head of the Music Education Department to begin August 1, 2019. The School of Music offers a comprehensive music program to 100 majors and is an accredited institutional member of NASM. Illinois Wesleyan is a nationally-ranked, small, private, exclusively undergraduate liberal arts university with highly selective admission criteria and a tradition of teaching excellence.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SALARY: Earned Doctorate in Music Education, a record of teaching excellence at the collegiate level, and demonstrated potential for continued scholarship and creative activity. Candidates must be familiar with Illinois State Board of Education Professional Teaching Standards and the Educative Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) or similar model. Preference will be given to those candidates with previous experience conducting an instrumental or choral ensemble. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will teach Foundations and Principles of Music Education, Practicum in Music Education, Student Teaching in Music Seminar, as well as a Methods course and an ensemble consistent with expertise; assist with the supervision of student teachers and the supervision of field observation hours; advise current music education students; coordinate administrative duties as the Head of the Music Education Department; participate in recruitment efforts; and mentor an active student chapter of NAfME.  A commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and demonstrated success with advising and mentoring, including engaging underrepresented students, are essential.
