Accounting Course Plan

Accounting Example Course Plan (first 4 semesters)

This is an example course plan based on the 2023-2024 University Catalog; your actual schedule may deviate from this example. Your faculty advisor will work with you to select appropriate courses. Course descriptions can be found within the University Catalog
As an IWU student, it is your responsibility to track your progress each semester towards completing graduation requirements using the MyIWU degree audit tool.

Fall Semester

  • ECON 100 Introduction to Economics (CSI) *
  • Choose one of the following:
    • DASC 125 Introduction to Data Sciences (FR) or
    • MATH 110 Finite Mathematics (FR) ** or
    • MATH 176 Calculus I (FR) ** 
  • ACC 112 Introduction to Financial Accounting
  • ACC 111 Accounting Procedures Lab (.5CU)***
  • Gateway Colloquium
  • Second Language Course****
  • Physical Education (PEX)

*A student earning a score of 4 or 5 in both AP Microeconomics AND AP Macroeconomics is not required to take ECON 100 for Accounting majors.

** DASC 125 or MATH 110 or MATH 176 should be taken during the first four semesters.

***ACC 111 must be taken during the fall semester during the first two years. It is a prerequisite for ACC 316 that is taken in the fifth semester.

****Students may place out of part or all of the Second Language Course requirement and may not have to complete three courses in this area.

Spring Semester

  • ACC 212 Introduction to Managerial Accounting
  • ACC 212L Introduction to Spreadsheet Applications (.5CU)*
  • General Education Course (or ECON 100 if not taken in the first semester)
  • General Education Course (or DASC 225)
  • Second Language Course (or a General Education Course)
  • Physical Education (PEY)
*ACC 212L must be taken concurrently with ACC 212.

May Term

  • May term is optional, however, if a student is planning to complete 150 semester hours in four years, they may have to take courses in one or more May term sessions. Students should consult with an Accounting faculty member to prepare a four-year plan.

Fall Semester

  • ACC 218 Accounting Information Systems
  • ECON 227 Statistics for Business and Economics *
  • General Education Course (or DASC/MATH if not completed in first semester)
  • Second Language Course
  • Physical Education (PEY)

* ECON 227 may be taken in any of the first four semesters, but is normally taken in the sophomore year. If a student has received a unit of credit for AP Statistics (score of 4 or 5), they are not required to take ECON 227.

Spring Semester

  • ACC 216 Professional Issues in Accounting (AV,W) * 
  • ACC 219 Introduction to Data Analytics in Accounting
  • General Education Course (or ECON 100 if not taken in the first semester)
  • General Education Course
  • Second Language Course(or BUS 355 Business Law if the second language requirement has been completed in the first three semesters)
  • Physical Education (PEY)
*ACC 216 may be taken in any semester after ACC 212 is completed but it is normally taken in the fourth semester or later. In addition to satisfying AV and W requirements, it fulfills the business ethics requirement for the CPA Exam.

May Term

  • May term is optional, however, if a student is planning to complete 150 semester hours in four years, they may have to take courses in one or more May term sessions. Students should consult with an Accounting faculty member to prepare a four-year plan.
Study Abroad

Students interested in studying abroad should consult with an Accounting faculty member to decide what semester(s) would be most appropriate. 

 

Additional Information
  • Students should complete the following six courses by the end of their sophomore year in order to move onto upper-level courses in the department: (1) Gateway, (2) DASC 125, or MATH 110, or 176, or proficiency; (3) ECON 100; (4) ECON 227; (5) ACC 112; ACC 111; (6) ACC 212; ACC 212L.
    • A grade of C- or higher must be earned in each of these courses.
    • In addition, a student's cumulative GPA in these six courses must equal or exceed 2.50.
  • Accounting majors should meet the Analysis of Values (AV) general education course requirement and one of the two Writing Intensive (WI) general education course requirements through ACC 216: Professional Issues in Accounting to adhere to the Illinois Board of Examiners Requirements for the CPA exam. 
    • ACC 216 may not be available to students until their junior year.
  • Students interested in double majoring should consult with an Accounting faculty member to consider a four-year plan.
  • Accounting faculty strongly recommend that students complete the certificate in Data Science by completing Data Science 125 and 225.
