Sharie A. Metcalfe, PhD, RN

Sharie A. Metcalfe received a B.S. in nursing at Bradley University in Peoria in 1975,
an M.S. in medical-surgical nursing at the University of Illinois – Chicago in 1981,
and her Ph.D. in nursing at Wayne State University in Detroit in 1996.
Prior to joining Illinois Wesleyan's faculty in 1979, Dr. Metcalfe was an instructor
at the University of Illinois, the Methodist Medical Center School of Nursing in Peoria
and the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines. She serves the community on
the St. Francis Medical Center Nursing Research Committee in Peoria and the Medical
Partnership Committee of the Bloomington-Normal Sister Cities program.
Metcalfe received an Illinois Wesleyan Curriculum Development Grant to travel to Madrid
in 2006 as part of an initiative to promote linguistic skills and cultural competence
in nursing graduates, and she developed a semester-long study abroad program for the
School of Nursing.
She has lectured nationally and internationally on topics including recruiting and
retention of nurses, engaging undergraduate students with research, and nursing theory.
Honors & Memberships
Dr. Metcalfe received the Robah Kellogg Alumni Award from the University of Illinois
in 2008, and was awarded the Illinois Nurse Educator Fellowship in 2006. She also
received the first Ruby Cealy Distinguished Alumni Award from St. Francis College
of Nursing in Peoria. She is a member of the International Orem Society, the American
Association of Critical Care Nurses and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society.
