Donna Hartweg, PhD, RN
Professor Emerita, School of Nursing
Donna Hartweg received her B.S.N. from the University of Iowa in 1965. She earned
a master's degree in education from Illinois State University in 1973, a master's
in nursing sciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1982, and a Ph.D.
in nursing from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1991.
Dr. Hartweg joined Illinois Wesleyan's faculty in 1978, and served as director of
the School of Nursing from 1990-2009. She was named the Caroline F. Rupert Professor
of Nursing in 1998. She has been appointed a visiting scholar at the University of
Arizona in Tucson, the University of Texas in San Antonio and an adjunct instructor
at the University of Illinois College of Nursing in Chicago.
Dr. Hartweg has served as a manuscript reviewer for several nursing journals, and
has published and presented extensively on topics including nursing theory and perceptions
of health and physical activity of Latinas in the Midwest and the Mexican border.
She was appointed by the governor in 2006 to the Illinois Center for Nursing Advisory
Council, which is addressing a growing shortage of nurses in Illinois. Dr. Hartweg
has chaired the BroMenn Healthcare Hospitals Board of Directors, Community Health
Care Clinic Board of Directors, the Illinois Association of Colleges of Nursing, and
served on other organizations, such as the Illinois Nurses’ Association and the BroMenn
Healthcare System Board of Directors. She currently serves on the John M. Scott Healthcare
Commission that provides healthcare services to the underserved of Bloomington/Normal.
Honors & Memberships
Dr. Hartweg is founder and member of the International Orem Society for Nursing Science
and Scholarship, and a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Theta Tau International, the
Midwest Nursing Research Society and the American Nurses Association. She received
the Robah Kellogg Alumni Award from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2007
and the Outstanding Nurse Educator Award from the Illinois Nurses’ Association in
