Writing Center Hosts Frederick Douglass Transcribe-a-Thon

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. –– The Writing Center at Illinois Wesleyan University is hosting a community transcribe-a-thon to celebrate the birthday of influential thinker Frederick Douglass on Friday, Feb. 14, 2020 –– Douglass Day –– from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Writing Center will offer space and computers in The Ames Library room 105b to transcribe the work of one of Douglass's contemporaries, Anna Julia Cooper, a visionary Black feminist leader, educator, intellectual, and activist.

Cooper was born into slavery in 1858, and she earned a Ph.D. from the University of Paris-Sorbonne. She wrote a foundational text of Black feminist thought, A Voice from the South by a Black Woman of the South.
