To the Class of 2020 and Their Families

May 26, 2020

I know we all wish this pandemic were over by now, but it is not, and the world seems unlikely to return to “normal” for a long time. In light of this, and given the state of Illinois restrictions, it has become clear that we will not be able to hold Commencement in-person as planned on August 2.

Being unable to gather on August 2 has caused changes in our plans. Some important details require your attention:

  • Diplomas and cords will be mailed to the home address on file in Banner for all spring and May term graduates with awarded degrees. If you would like them mailed to a different address, please notify the Registrar's Office by June 5th by sending an email to Keep in mind that diplomas will not be mailed if students have any holds on their account.
  • We have made arrangements for the caps and gowns you have ordered to be shipped to your home or other preferred address at no charge. You do not need to return them - they are yours to keep. Please use this link and select the HOME SHIP OPTION.

Not being able to gather together for Commencement is a huge disappointment for all of us—members of the Class of 2020, families, friends, and all of us at the University, who are so proud to watch you process and cross the stage. We are working on alternative plans for a virtual ceremony that we will communicate soon. Until then, please stay safe and well.

If you have questions, please refer to the IWU website at or contact us at or (309) 556-3780.

With best regards,

S. Georgia Nugent
