Empty Theatre: A Novel by Jac Jemc '05

Jac Jemc ‘05 is a 2023 Guggenheim Fellow and the author of three novels and two collections of stories. Her story collection False Bingo won the Chicago Review of Books Award for fiction, was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award for LGBTQ Speculative Fiction, and was longlisted for The Story Prize. She teaches creative writing at UC San Diego and directs the Clarion Writers’ Workshop for speculative fiction. 

We’ll be discussing Jemc’s latest novel Empty Theatre, which received starred reviews in Kirkus Reviews and Booklist, was featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition, and named a finalist for the California Book Award. Audience members are encouraged to read the book prior to this virtual event and come prepared with questions for the author. Dr. Lindsey Fitzharris ‘04 is a New York Times bestselling author, television host, and medical historian with a PhD from the University of Oxford. She writes regularly for the Wall Street Journal, Scientific American, The Guardian, The Lancet, and New Scientist. In addition to writing, Lindsey curates medical history content for over 500,000 followers on social media, and actively develops TV shows for multiple high profile production companies. Her next book, Sleuth-Hound, will be a whirlwind tour of Victorian forensics from the perspective of the medical detective, Joseph Bell, who loaned a voice and razor-sharp logic to Baker St.’s famous resident: Sherlock Holmes.

We’ll be discussing Fitzharris’ first book, The Butchering Art: Joseph Lister's Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine, which won the PEN Award for Literary Science Writing, and has been translated into 20 languages.
