Graduating Student Survey

We are pleased to provide you with information about the various activities that celebrate your upcoming graduation from Illinois Wesleyan. Please read carefully, since these events are an important part of your graduation. Most information and updates will also be posted on the Commencement website www.iwu.edu/commencement/

***Academic Regalia---distributed on April 9 and 10

The academic regalia (cap, gown, and hood) that you have ordered will be distributed on Monday, April 9 and Tuesday, April 10 from 10 am until 3 pm in the Hansen Student Center. Regalia must be worn for the Honors Convocation on Wednesday, April 11 and the Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, April 29 (see below for information on those events). Some organizations provide Honors Cords for members and your organization should provide information to you if they do so.

AFTER APRIL 10, your order will be held at the Bookstore in the Hansen Student Center and you may pick it up during their business hours. If those times do not meet your schedule, please contact the Bookstore for other arrangements (309-556-3059). The last opportunity to pick up your regalia before the ceremony is on Sunday, April 29 at 10 am at the Bookstore.

***Senior Class Dinner---April 10

You have received the invitation to a formal dinner in honor of your graduation on Tuesday, April 10 at 6 pm in the Young Main Lounge of Memorial Center. This event is a wonderful opportunity for you to reminisce with classmates as you are welcomed into the IWU Alumni Association, which will provide an Alumni T-Shirt to all attendees.

***Honors Convocation---April 11

The 2012 Honors Convocation is at 11 am on Wednesday, April 11 in Westbrook Auditorium of Presser Hall. The Convocation is dedicated especially to the Class of 2012 and also to all students who have earned scholastic and activity honors and honor society membership. Dr. William Munro, professor of political science and recipient of the 2012 Kemp Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence, will be the keynote speaker with your class president, Kathryn Breisch, presiding.

All members of the senior class are invited and encouraged to participate in the Convocation processional and recessional, wearing full academic regalia (with tassels worn on the right side). Please meet in the Music Building, room 161, before 10:45 a.m. where Faculty Marshals will organize you for the processional to Westbrook Auditorium. There is no specific order for the processional line up; you may walk in whatever order you wish. During the Convocation Invocation, it is traditional that men remove their caps.

***Commencement Information---for April 29 Ceremony

You and your family have received Commencement communications which provide much information and which can also be viewed on the IWU website at www.iwu.edu/commencement/   An additional e-mail with more specifics about the Commencement Ceremony itself will be sent to you on or about April 23 and also be posted on the website.

PLEASE NOTE: Commencement is held outdoors even in light rain or cool temperatures, so you should prepare and dress accordingly. Because of the construction of the new classroom building, a special stage will be installed at the south end of the Quad for the ceremony. Graduates will process from the Ames Library Plaza as usual and be seated on the lawn, facing south with McPherson Theatre, Presser Hall and the Ames Art Building creating the background behind the stage. Faculty and audience seating will be available on the lawn behind the graduates and on both sides of the Quad.

If we relocate to the Shirk Center because of heavy rain or severe weather alerts, there is very limited seating available for your family and guests. Chair seating for Graduates and Faculty is located on the floor of the Performance Arena along with some wheel-chair accessible seating, leaving bleacher seating for guests. To ensure that each Graduate can have family or friends in attendance, we have provided each graduate's family with FOUR tickets for reserved seating in the Performance Arena. Those tickets were mailed to the family in the Commencement mailing dated March 21, 2012. We regret that we cannot provide extra tickets, but it is most fair to allow each Graduate to have some family and friends in attendance at the indoor ceremony rather than a first-come seating arrangement wherein some families would be excluded entirely. Additional information regarding unreserved seating in the Performance Arena and other indoor seating venues is provided in the Commencement mailing and on the website.
