Important Information for 2008 Graduating Seniors
From the President's Office
Congratulations on your upcoming graduation. We are pleased to provide you with information about the various activities that celebrate Commencement. Please read carefully, since these events are an important part of your graduation. Most information and updates will also be posted on the Commencement Web site.
Your regalia (cap, gown, and hood, which reflect the degree you will receive) will be distributed on Tuesday, April 1 and Wednesday, April 2 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Hansen Student Center. The Alumni Office has a special gift for graduates who stop by these two days, and the Jostens representative can still take on-line orders for announcements and class rings (see the Commencement Web site). Some organizations provide Honors Cords for members and your organization should provide information to you if they do so.
AFTER APRIL 2, your order will be held at the Bookstore in the Hansen Student Center and you may pick it up during their business hours, which are 8-6 Monday-Thursday, 8-5 Friday, and 10-5 Saturday. If none of those times meet your schedule, please contact the Bookstore for other arrangements (309-556-3059). The last opportunity to pick up your regalia is before the ceremony on Sunday, May 4 at the Bookstore, which will be open 9:30-3:30 that day.
Regalia must be worn for the Honors Convocation on Wednesday, April 16 and Commencement on Sunday, May 4 (see below for information on those events).
You have received the invitation to a formal dinner in honor of your graduation on Tuesday, April 1 at 5:30 p.m. in the Young Main Lounge of Memorial Center. This event is a wonderful opportunity for you to reminisce with classmates, faculty, and staff as you are welcomed into the IWU Alumni Association, which will provide an Alumni T-Shirt to all attendees. Be sure to RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org
The 2008 Honors Convocation is at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16 in Westbrook Auditorium of Presser Hall. The Convocation is dedicated especially to the Class of 2008 and also to all students who have earned scholastic and activity honors and honor society membership. Professor Marina Balina, the Isaac Funk Professor and recipient of the 2008 Pantagraph Award for Teaching Excellence, will be the keynote speaker with your class president, Chris Burrichter, presiding.
All members of the senior class are invited and encouraged to participate in the Convocation processional and recessional, in full academic regalia (with tassels worn on the right side). Please meet in the Music Building, room 161, at 10:45 a.m. where Faculty Marshals will organize you for the processional to Westbrook Auditorium. There is no specific order for the processional line up; you may walk in whatever order you wish. During the Convocation Invocation and Benediction, it is traditional that men remove their caps.
You and your family will soon receive a Commencement mailing that provides much information and which can also be reviewed on the IWU Web site at
An additional e-mail with more specifics about the Commencement ceremony itself will be sent to you on or about April 28 and also be posted on the Web site.
PLEASE NOTE: Commencement is held outdoors even in light rain or cool temperatures, so you should prepare and dress accordingly.
If we relocate to the Shirk Center because of heavy rain or severe weather alerts, there is very limited seating available for your family and guests. Chair seating for Graduates and Faculty is located on the floor of the Performance Arena along with some handicapped-accessible seating, leaving bleacher seating for guests. To ensure that each Graduate can have family or friends in attendance, we provide each graduate's family with FOUR tickets for reserved seating in the Performance Arena. Those tickets are mailed to the family in the Commencement mailing mentioned above. We regret that we cannot provide extra tickets, but it is most fair to allow each Graduate to have some family and friends in attendance at the indoor ceremony rather than a first-come seating arrangement wherein some families would be excluded entirely. Additional information regarding unreserved seating in the Performance Arena and other indoor seating venues is provided in the Commencement mailing and on the Web site.
As part of your final requirements towards graduation, we ask that you take 10 minutes and complete the Graduating Student Survey. This survey is essential to Illinois Wesleyan in learning about your employment placement and/or graduate and professional school admissions.
Please access the survey using the following link and contact email@example.com if you have questions:
