We hope you are looking forward to Commencement Day, Sunday, May 4, 2008

This message provides information regarding the line up for the Processional and a brief outline of the Ceremony itself. As always, we assume a 2-hour outdoor ceremony, even in cool weather or light rain, unless weather alerts or heavy rain necessitate a move to the Shirk Center.  Please dress appropriately for the weather predicted for Commencement Day, and bring sunscreen or water as you wish.

PROCESSIONAL – Line up at 12:20 p.m. on Ames Plaza

Like all ceremonies, Commencement should be conducted with dignity and without confusion.

Coordination and instructions on Sunday, May 4 will come from the Senior Faculty Marshals--Professors Frank Boyd, Zahia Drici and Rebecca Roesner.  Other faculty will join them as Marshals for the day.  Junior Class president Carissa Nemmers and Student Senate president Andrea Ambrosia will serve as Student Marshals.

Line up for the Processional begins at ***12:20 p.m.*** and you must be dressed in your robe and hood.   You will first assemble on The Ames Plaza where President Wilson will briefly greet you.  The Ames Library restrooms will be available to you from noon to 12:40 p.m.

Graduates then proceed to the sidewalks on both sides of McPherson Theatre to line up in the College of Liberal Arts and the Schools of Nursing, Art, Theatre Arts, and Music.  Signs will be posted to indicate where the groups start.  IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE CORRECT DIPLOMA, YOU MUST LINE UP IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER BY DEGREE AS LISTED IN THE COMMENCEMENT PROGRAM.  The programs will be available when you arrive at Ames Plaza.  All will go well, if you just follow the person listed ahead of you in the program.

1.  Graduates receiving the following degrees will line up single-file ON THE SIDEWALK ON THE **WEST** (BUCK) SIDE OF McPHERSON THEATRE

B.S.N. for School of Nursing graduates

B.F.A. for Art, Theatre Arts and Music Theatre

B.M. for Music

B.M.E. for Music Education

B.A. and B.S. for Liberal Arts, from Abraham through Hitchcock, alphabetically

2.  B.A. and B.S. Liberal Arts graduates from Hoffman through Zwolinski, alphabetically, will line up single-file ON THE SIDEWALK ON THE **EAST** (PRESSER) SIDE OF McPHERSON THEATRE.

At 12:45 p.m., the Processional will begin.

• Faculty Marshals will lead the Graduating Seniors toward Sheean on the sidewalks on each side of the Quad.

• The processional will then stop and Graduates will step to the outside of the sidewalk.  That provides a walkway so that the Mace Bearer and the Student Marshals can lead the Platform Party past you to the stage.

• Graduates remain in place while the Marshals lead the Faculty past you in a procession of honor.  Please feel free to share greetings with Faculty as they pass.

• Marshals then lead Graduates behind the Faculty and walk down a center aisle between the chairs on the Quad.  Senior Marshals will direct you to your seat in rows which consist of 14 chairs on each side.

During the Invocation and Benediction, it is customary that men remove their caps.

CONFERRING OF DEGREES

The Marshals and President Wilson will guide you through this step.  Follow the person listed ahead of you in the program to remain in order.

• By degrees as listed in the Commencement program, President Wilson will ask you to rise, confer your degree, and then ask you to come forward to receive your diploma.

• The Marshals will direct you to the left (west) side of the stage where your photograph will be taken by a professional photographer as you walk toward him.  You will walk up the Sheean ramp, give your name to the Reader, and move towards President Wilson at the front of the stage as your name is announced.

• When you reach the President you shake his right hand and receive your diploma in your left hand.  Look at the President as you receive your diploma, while another photograph is taken by the photographer.

• Follow the graduate in front of you to the back of the stage and go down the right (east) ramp where a third, posed photo will be taken.

• Marshals will then direct your route back to your chair.

RECESSIONAL AND RECEPTION

After the ceremony ends, the Mace Bearer and Student Marshals lead the Platform Party in the Recessional.  The Marshals then direct the Faculty and finally the Graduates from the center aisle.  Please keep the line moving and return to the Ames Plaza before stopping, and arrange in advance with your family where you will meet on the Quad after the ceremony.  During the reception, faculty will be gathered to greet you and your family near signs listing the individual Department and School names.  Please look for the signs and visit with faculty before you depart.

Return caps, gowns and hoods before 4 pm to the Nell Eckley Lounge, Memorial Center.   You may keep your tassel.

******INDOOR (SHIRK CENTER) CEREMONY******

In the event of heavy rain or threatening weather, the Commencement ceremony will be held in Shirk Center Performance Arena.   The Marshals will be positioned on the track at the north end of the Shirk Activity Center to help you line up.

INDOOR PROCESSIONAL – Line up begins at 12:20 p.m.

Line up for the Indoor Processional begins at 12:20 p.m. ALONG THE NORTH TRACK OF THE SHIRK ACTIVITY CENTER where President Wilson will briefly greet you.  There will be signs positioned along the north track which indicate where the College of Liberal Arts and the Schools of Nursing, Art, Theatre Arts and Music will gather, forming two lines.  IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE CORRECT DIPLOMA, YOU MUST LINE UP IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER BY DEGREE AS LISTED IN THE COMMENCEMENT PROGRAM, which will be available when you arrive.

1.  The following degree groupings will line up in one line as directed by the Marshals:

B.S.N. for School of Nursing graduates

• Then follow the Marshal’s directions to return to your seat.

INDOOR RECESSIONAL AND RECEPTION

After the ceremony ends, the Mace Bearer and Platform Party begin the Recessional down the center aisle, followed by Faculty and then Graduates, as directed by the Marshals, down the center aisle.  Please keep the line moving and return to the north end of the Activity Center before stopping, and arrange in advance with your family where you will meet after the ceremony.  During the reception, faculty will be gathered to greet you and your family near signs listing the individual Department and School names.
