Commencement

April 3, 2007

To the Class of 2007 and their Families:

You are cordially invited to attend the Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2007 to be held Sunday, May 6, 2007 at 1:00 p.m.  We ask that guests be seated by 12:15 p.m. so that the procession of graduates and faculty can begin at 12:40 p.m.  Chair seating for the traditional outdoor ceremony is on the lawn of the Eckley Quadrangle.

Our alumna speaker is Demetria Kalodimos, an award-winning news anchor at WSMV Television in Nashville, Tenn. A 1981 cum laude graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University with a degree in music education, Ms. Kalodimos continued her education at the University of Illinois where she received a master of science in journalism.  She has been awarded 15 Emmys, two National Headliner Awards, the Investigative Reporters and Editors National Award, and a national citation from American Women in Radio and Television, Inc.  Her distinguished career and perspective on social issues should be of interest to the graduates of 2007.  During the ceremony we are also pleased to honor author and human rights activist Marjorie Agosín, who is a professor of Spanish at Wellesley College in Massachusetts and has been a guest lecturer at Illinois Wesleyan on three occasions.  One of her most significant and well-known books, which won the Alta Prize for Poetry, is Circles of Madness: Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (1992), which is dedicated to the Argentine women whose children disappeared during the military dictatorship that began in 1976.  More information on both of our honorees is available on our web site.

The Commencement ceremony is outdoors, even in a light rain and cool temperatures, so please plan accordingly.  In the event of heavy rains or weather alerts, we will relocate the ceremony and reception to the Shirk Center.  We had given much consideration to an off-campus site for an indoor ceremony and received comments from students, faculty and staff, but in the end we decided to continue the long-standing tradition to celebrate on campus. Since seating in the Shirk Center is quite limited, we are enclosing tickets for reserved seating in the Performance Arena with this mailing in the envelopes addressed to the families of the graduates. Additional indoor seating venues and other important information are included in the enclosed brochure.  Please also view our web site www.iwu.edu/commencement for updated Commencement information along the way, including a special Festival of Talents on Saturday evening and other activities that the Senior Class is developing for the weekend.

Following the two-hour ceremony, join us for a reception in tents on the Quad or in the Shirk Center Activity Area.  The faculty and staff who guided your students over the past few years will greet you and join in celebrating the achievements of the Class of 2007.  I hope to see you there.

Sincerely,
