We hope you are looking forward to Commencement Day, Sunday, May 6, 2007

This message provides information regarding the line up for the Processional and a brief outline of the Ceremony itself. As always, we assume a 2-hour outdoor ceremony, even in cool weather or light rain, unless weather alerts or heavy rain necessitate a move to the Shirk Center.  Please dress appropriately for the weather predicted for Commencement Day.

PROCESSIONAL – Line up at 12:20 p.m. on Ames Plaza

Like all ceremonies, Commencement should be conducted with dignity and without confusion. Coordination and instructions on Sunday, May 6 will come from the Senior Faculty Marshals, Professors Mona Gardner, Frank Boyd and Zahia Drici.  Other faculty will join them as Marshals for the day.  Junior Class officers Chris Burrichter and Erin Cox will serve as Student Marshals.

Line up for the Processional begins at ***12:20 p.m.***  Assemble on The Ames Plaza where President Wilson will briefly greet you.  You must be dressed in your robes and hood. The Ames Library facilities will be available to you from noon to 12:40 p.m.

Graduates then proceed to the sidewalks on either side of McPherson Theatre to line up in the College of Liberal Arts and the Schools of Nursing, Art, Theatre Arts, and Music.  Stanchions and signs will be posted to indicate where the groups start.  IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE CORRECT DIPLOMA, YOU MUST LINE UP IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER BY DEGREE AS LISTED IN THE COMMENCEMENT PROGRAM.  The programs will be available when you arrive at Ames Plaza.  All will go well if you follow the person listed ahead of you in the program.

1.  Graduates receiving the following degrees will line up single-file ON THE SIDEWALK ON THE **WEST** (BUCK) SIDE OF McPHERSON THEATRE

B.S.N.
B.F.A.
B.M.
B.M.E.
B.A. and B.S. from A through Hollis, alphabetically

2.  B.A. and B.S. graduates from Holloway through Z, alphabetically, will line up single-file ON THE SIDEWALK ON THE **EAST** (PRESSER) SIDE OF McPHERSON THEATRE.

At 12:45 p.m., Faculty Marshals will begin the Processional by leading the Graduating Seniors toward Sheean on the sidewalks on each side of the Quad.  Graduates will stop and step to the outside of the sidewalk to leave a walkway so that the Mace Bearer and the Student Marshals can lead the Platform Party past you to the stage.

Marshals will then lead the Faculty past Graduates in a processional of honor, with final greetings to be shared with Faculty as you wish. The Graduates then follow the Faculty down the center aisle to their seats on the Quad, as directed by the Senior Marshals.

During the Invocation and Benediction, men should remove their caps.

CONFERRING OF DEGREES

The Marshals and President Wilson will guide you through this step.  Follow the person listed ahead of you in the program to remain in order.

--By degree as listed in the Commencement program, President Wilson will ask you to rise, confer your degree, and then ask you to come forward to receive your diploma.

--The Marshals will direct you to the left (west) side of the stage where you will go up the Sheean ramp, give your name to the Reader, and move towards President Wilson at the front of the stage as your name is announced.

--When you reach the President you shake his right hand and receive your diploma in your left hand.  Look at the President as you receive your diploma—your photograph will be taken by a professional photographer.

--Follow the graduate in front of you to the back of the stage and go down the right (east) ramp where a second photo will be taken.

--Then follow the Marshal’s directions to return to your seat.

RECESSIONAL AND RECEPTION

After the ceremony ends, the Mace Bearer and Student Marshals lead the Platform Party in the Recessional, followed by the Faculty and then the Graduates, as directed by the Marshals from the center aisle. Please keep the line moving and return to the Ames Plaza before stopping.  Arrange in advance with your family where you will meet on the Quad after the ceremony.  During the reception, faculty will be gathered to greet you and your family near signs listing the individual Department and School names.

Return caps, gowns and hoods immediately to the Nell Eckley Lounge, Memorial Center.   You may keep your tassel.
