From the President's Office, ext. 3151 or smilliga@iwu.edu

April 24, 2006

We hope you are looking forward to Commencement Day, Sunday, April 30, 2006.

This message provides information regarding the line up for the Processional and a brief outline of the Ceremony itself.  As always, we assume a 2-hour outdoor ceremony, even in cool weather or light rain, unless weather alerts or heavy rain necessitate a move to the Shirk Center.  Please dress appropriately for the weather predicted for Commencement Day.

PROCESSIONAL – Line up at 12:20 p.m. on Ames Plaza

Professors Mona Gardner and Frank Boyd will serve as Senior Faculty Marshals at Commencement, with other faculty joining them as Marshals.  Junior Class President Scott Simons and Paul Teipe will serve as Student Marshals.  Coordination and instructions on Sunday, April 30 will come from the Senior Faculty Marshals.

Line up for the Processional begins at ***12:20 p.m.*** on the Ames Plaza.  President Wilson will greet you briefly and the Marshals will then organize the Graduates into two lines.

IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE CORRECT DIPLOMA, YOU MUST LINE UP IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER BY DEGREE, AS LISTED IN THE COMMENCEMENT PROGRAM (which will be available when you arrive at Ames Plaza).

Look for signs on the Plaza grounds which indicate where the College of Liberal Arts and the Schools of Nursing, Art, Theatre Arts and Music will gather, as described here:

1.  Graduates receiving the following degrees will line up single-file ON THE SIDEWALK ON THE **WEST (BUCK)** SIDE OF McPHERSON THEATRE
B.S.N
B.F.A.
B.M.
B.M.E
B.A. and B.S. from A-to-Jones (Christopher) alphabetically

2.  B.A. and B.S. graduates from Jones (Cornelius) -Z alphabetically will line up single-file ON THE SIDEWALK ON THE **EAST** (PRESSER) SIDE OF McPHERSON THEATRE.

At 12:45 p.m., Faculty Marshals will begin the Processional by leading the two lines of Graduates on the sidewalks on each side of the Quad towards Sheean.  Graduates then step to the outside of the sidewalk to leave a walkway so that the Student Marshals can lead the Platform Party past you to the stage.

Marshals will then lead the Faculty past Graduates in a processional of honor, with final greetings to be shared as you wish. The Graduates then follow the Faculty down the center aisle to their seats on the Quad, as directed by the Senior Marshals.

During the Invocation and Benediction, men should remove their caps.

CONFERRING OF DEGREES

The Marshals and President Wilson will guide you through this step.  By degree, President Wilson will ask you to rise, confer the degree, and then ask you to come forward to receive your diploma.  The Marshals will direct you to the left side of the stage where you will give your name to the reader, receive your diploma and a handshake from President Wilson while your picture is taken by a professional photographer, continue across the stage where a second photo will be taken, and return to your seat.

RECESSIONAL AND RECEPTION

After the ceremony ends, the Platform Party leads the Recessional, followed by Faculty and then Graduates, as directed by the Marshals.  Please keep the line moving and return to the Ames Plaza before stopping.  Then you will join your family and friends for the reception on the Eckley Quad (you may want to arrange a meeting spot with them in advance).

Return caps, gowns and hoods immediately to the Nell Eckley Lounge, Memorial Center.   You may keep your tassel.

******INDOOR (SHIRK CENTER) CEREMONY******
