Assistant Director of Student Involvement
The Assistant Director of Student Involvement plays a pivotal role in advancing student engagement, student success and the personal development of students within the Illinois Wesleyan University community. This position is dedicated to employing student development, identity, and persistence theories to cultivate a holistic approach to co-curricular engagement. Reporting directly to the Director of Student Involvement, the Assistant Director is responsible for the oversight, guidance, and support of various student engagement initiatives, including fraternity and sorority life, leadership programs, registered student organizations, and campus activities. This is a full time, 12 month, on-campus position. Generous benefits include health, retirement, considerable time off and access to multiple tuition programs for employees and dependents.
Responsibilities:
- Fraternity and Sorority Life Advising & Support: provide guidance, mentorship, and support to individual Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council executive board officers to help them fulfill their organizational missions, align with university policies, and achieve their goals; serve as primary advisor for the Panhellenic Council or Interfraternity Council depending on department need; provide guidance, mentorship, and support to individual fraternity and sorority chapters and their student leaders; serve as a direct liaison between the institution and (inter)national organization; facilitate leadership development programs and initiatives within the fraternity/sorority community, offering chapters resources and training to enhance their leadership skills, organizational effectiveness, and ethical conduct; leadership for risk management practices including alcohol and other drug education, bystander intervention, safe social hosting, etc; develop and deliver educational initiatives, workshops, and seminars on topics relevant to the fraternity and sorority community, such as risk management, leadership, and personal development.
- University Programming, Advising & Development: provide guidance and mentorship to the members of the Campus Activities Board and/or co-advise the Student Senate with VP for Student Affairs; assist CAB or Student Senate in managing their annual student activity fee budget; develop the student engagement activities associated with IWU's annual Day of Giving (All In for Wesleyan); assist with the development of student engagement activities associated with Homecoming and Family Weekend; develop marketing strategies to effectively promote campus activities and Student Involvement programming, utilizing various communication channels to reach a broad student audience; help manage the InvolvedIWU social media platforms (Instagram).
- Registered Student Organization (RSO) Development, Support and Oversight: manage and maintain the registration process for 100+ student organizations, ensuring that they meet the necessary university requirements and complete the required paperwork to maintain their registered status; serve as the chair of the New RSO Recognition Committee; help maintain MyIWU Groups RSO information page; organize training sessions, workshops, and programs that enhance the leadership skills and capabilities of RSO leaders, members, and advisors, covering topics such as effective communication, teamwork, event management, and risk management; assist in interpreting and applying policies to organizational activities; assist RSOs in developing effective marketing and promotional strategies to maximize event participation; oversee the planning and execution of the annual RSO Fair.
- Leadership Programs & Recognition: develop and implement leadership development programs and initiatives that empower students to cultivate leadership skills, ethical values, and personal growth, including assisting the Student Senate Thriving Titan Leadership Program; plan and execute the Do Well and Do Good Involvement Awards program that celebrates the accomplishments and contributions of student leaders, RSOs, and outstanding individuals or groups within the university community; develop assessment tools and metrics to measure the impact and effectiveness of leadership programs, recognition initiatives, and student leader development.
- Supervision and Departmental Initiatives: oversee the recruitment, selection, and training of practicum interns; co-supervise practicum students in Student Involvement; help oversee the Hansen Student Crew; assist in the planning and execution of office-related initiatives, projects, and events, providing logistical and administrative support to ensure their success; serve as a representative of the Office of Student Involvement at various campus programs and events, fostering connections, promoting engagement, and advancing the office's mission and goals; perform additional tasks and responsibilities as directed or required to support the mission and goals of the Office of Student Involvement; represent Office of Student Involvement and build community through active presence at campus events.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree required/master's preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum requirement of 1 year of related experience in student affairs, specifically leading fraternity/sorority initiatives; preference for additional experience in campus activities or student government
- Knowledge of student development theories, multiple National Interfraternity/Panhellenic organizations, policies and procedures surrounding campus activities, and best practices in risk prevention related to alcohol use, hazing and mental health
- Frequent evening/weekend work required; on-call for emergencies outside of regular business hours. Occasional travel.
- Valid Driver’s License
