Example Course Plan

For students entering IWU in fall 2021 and beyond, American Culture Studies is no longer available as a major or minor.

American Culture Studies Course Plan (first 3 semesters)

This is an example plan based on the 2020–2021 University Catalog; your actual schedule may deviate from this example. Your faculty advisor will work with you to select appropriate courses.

As an IWU student, it is your responsibility to track your progress each semester towards completing graduation requirements using the MyIWU degree evaluation tool.

Fall Semester

  • One course from Interdisciplinary Foundations  (may count for a General Education requirement as well)
  • Gateway Colloquium
  • Second Language Course
  • Physical Education (PEX)

Spring Semester

  • ACS/HIST 150 Introduction to American Culture Studies (CHC, U)
  • General Education Course or one course from Interdisciplinary Foundations (may count for a General Education requirement as well) if not taken in the fall.
  • General Education Course (or Gateway if not completed in the fall)
  • Second Language Course
  • Physical Education (PEY)

May Term

  • Optional

Fall Semester

  • One 200-level course from  Migration, Transnationalism, and Globalization  (may count for a General Education requirement as well).

Study Abroad

For students interested in studying abroad, the recommended semester(s) is: any semester.

Additional Information

  • If a student enters IWU knowing s/he wants to major in American Culture Studies, s/he should take American Culture Studies/History 150 and Anthropology 171 in the first year if possible. Many students, however, come to American Culture Studies later, which is just fine.
