WHEREAS, Illinois Wesleyan University, an esteemed independent, residential, liberal arts institution, was founded in the year 1850, embarking on a remarkable journey of education and enlightenment that has now spanned 175 years; and
WHEREAS, since its inception, Illinois Wesleyan University has been a beacon of academic excellence, guided by its motto, “Scientia et Sapientia” (knowledge and wisdom), fostering creativity, critical thinking, effective communication, strength of character, and a spirit of inquiry in countless students; and
WHEREAS, Illinois Wesleyan University has not only provided exceptional educational opportunities in liberal arts, fine arts, and professional fields but has also significantly contributed to the intellectual, cultural, and economic vibrancy of the City of Bloomington; and
WHEREAS, the City of Bloomington and Illinois Wesleyan University share a rich, intertwined history, growing together since the mid-19th century, with the University serving as a cornerstone of our community's development and a source of pride for generations of residents; and
WHEREAS, the values upheld by Illinois Wesleyan University – including a dedication to lifelong learning, community engagement, and global citizenship – resonate deeply with the aspirations and character of the City of Bloomington; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper to recognize the enduring legacy and profound contributions of Illinois Wesleyan University to our city, state, nation, and the world on the occasion of its 175th anniversary;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED by the Mayor of the City of Bloomington, Illinois, that September 23, 2025, shall be officially designated as:
in the City of Bloomington.
BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED that all citizens of Bloomington are encouraged to join in celebrating this significant milestone, acknowledging the invaluable partnership between our city and Illinois Wesleyan University, and looking forward to many more years of shared progress and mutual benefit.
