Hoyt, Fred and Karen Bussone attended the fall educators' conference of the Marketing Management Association, Sept. 23-25 in St. Louis. Hoyt, a former president of the association, served on two panels – one on professional memberships, and one on bringing the world into the classroom. Bussone participated in the organization's workshops for new instructors.

Theune, Michael published an essay, "Missed Communications: Three New Anthologies" in Pleiades: A Journal of New Writing, vol. 29.2.


Library

Thomas, Marcia, with Anke Voss, compiled and edited "Emergency Response Planning in College Libraries," published by The Association of College & Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. The book highlights emergency policies and procedures in college libraries to handle disasters, and identifies best practices.

Biology

Lehr, Edgar, with Alessandro Catenazzi (Berkeley), published findings on three new species of frogs: "Three new species of Bryophryne (Anura: Strabomantidae) from the Region of Cusco," South American Journal of Herpetology 4(2):125–138. The discovery was reported  by Wildlife Extra and, in Spanish, by a Peruvian news agency. | Read more.

French, Linda presented "The Astronomical Education of John Goodricke: A First Look" at the Division for Planetary Sciences Meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, on Oct. 3.

School of Music

Garrett, Roger gave a guest solo performance of Carl Maria von Weber's Clarinet Concertino as principal clarinetist with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra on Oct. 10.

Vayo, David won the eighth Andres Gaos Music Composition Prize, awarded by the Spanish province of A Coruna. In addition to a monetary award, the prize includes the world premiere performance of Vayo's composition "Wellspring" by the Symphony Orchestra of A Coruna during one of its next two seasons.

In addition:
– Vayo's composition, "Climb," was performed at the University of Wisconsin/Madison on Sept. 17 by trombonist Mark Hetzler and percussionist Anthony di Sanza, both of the UW faculty. On Sept. 20, they repeated the performance at Illinois Wesleyan.
– Vayo attended the world premiere of his composition "Enlightenment" on Oct. 1 at the University of Iowa. The piece was written for the Mexico City-based ensemble ONIX, who then traveled to IWU to perform at the Symposium of Contemporary Music on Oct. 2 and 3.
– Guitarist Zane Merritt performed Vayo's "Berceuse," and Merritt and Vayo played a free improvisation during a concert at the Midwest regional conference of the Society of Composers at Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa.

School of Nursing

Lessen, Brenda authored an abstract, "Effect of Oral Stimulation on Feeding Progression in Preterm Infants," published in the August 2009 edition of Advances in Neonatal Care.

School of Theatre Arts

Susong, Scott presented the findings from his review of curricular structures of musical theater conservatory programs worldwide at the European Conference of the Musical Theater Educators Alliance (MTEA), held Sept. 7-12 at the Danish Musical Theater Academy in Fredericia, Denmark and the Stage School in Hamburg, Germany.

Gearhart, Rebecca was profiled in connection with her visual anthropology research in a column by Erinn C. Howard '03 in the Summer 2009 issue of the Association for Women in Science magazine. Read the article (pdf).
