BLOOMINGTON, Ill.— Sept. 6 from 4-5 p.m. in the Hansen Student Center (300 Beecher Street Bloomington), Associate Dean of Faculty and Professor of Educational Studies Irving Epstein, Professor of Hispanic Studies Carmela Ferradans, Chair of Sociology and Anthropology and Associate Professor of Anthropology Rebecca Gearhart, Professor of Art Sherilyn McElroy, Professor of Political Science William Munro and Chair and Associate Professor of Political Science James Simeone will host an opening forum on the "Making Human Rights Real" Cluster of courses and related activities.
The program will include a brief overview of the history of human rights, explanation of some terms recurring in following forums and introduction to the kind of experiences that students will be exposed to during the semester. Also experiences and interests regarding human rights will be discussed in small groups.
"Making Human Rights Real" panels are in connection with the human rights cluster of courses offered by various departments. The cluster includes five instructors teaching eight courses during the fall 2012 semester, who plan a joint series of activities that support student engagement regarding human rights themes. The departments of Anthropology, Educational Studies, Hispanic Studies, International Studies, and Political Science offer the courses.
