Angoulême St-Pierre - Nave

Angouleme St Pierre Nef

The domed vault on pendentives is, with only a few exceptions, peculiar to the southwest of France. Striking in its boldness, this type of vaulting directs weight successfully to the supporting pillars and permits the opening of large spaces in the outside wall. This type of vaulting occurs at Saint-Etienne in Périgueux, in the cathedrals of Cahors, Souillac et Solignac, and spread as far as Fontevraud Abbey in Anjou.
