Director of International Office

The Director of the International Office oversees all aspects of the study abroad program and supports ISSS staff in international student advising and international student/scholar services (ISSS). The Director maintains expertise in student advising best practice, resource stewardship, internal database systems, and study abroad engagement, outreach, and equitable access; and, if appropriate for level of experience, serves as PDSO/RO for the University’s F and J visa programs, liaises with University-retained counsel for H-I and PERM applications, and acts as primary contact with officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of State (DOS) and related agencies (SEVP, USCIS).  The Director  is required to stay current on changing regulations and federal policies affecting international services and supervise ISSS staff.  This position may be required to travel to conduct periodic site visits and to attend, facilitate, and/or present at meetings or conferences domestically and internationally. Some evening and weekend hours to lead events will be required. Per federal regulations, the candidate must be a US citizen or US lawful permanent resident. Responsibilities:

  • Study abroad advising: advise students on options and work with them through application; review and process IWU study abroad applications and complete required forms for affiliated applications; prepare and deliver online and in-person pre-departure orientations; coordinate review of study abroad scholarship applications with Advisory Committee; design and implement marketing campaigns for study abroad
  • Administer study abroad programs: administer IWU’s semester abroad programs; support May Term Travel and IWU Freeman Asia; liaise with affiliated partners and custom program providers including student support and academic content; coordinate information with campus offices; monitor risk, safety abroad (USDOS, CDC, OSAC, NAFSA, AlertTraveler)
  • Manage International Office: oversee office budget and balanced spending between study abroad and international students/scholars; establish and review policies relating to study abroad and international student compliance; manage and update the Terra Dotta SaaS, ensuring affiliated program information is up to date; support non-study abroad international travel (e.g., athletic teams)
  • Oversee and support international student/scholar services, including international faculty: supervise ISS advisor; and, if appropriate with level of experience, serve as PDSO/RO in University’s SEVIS program and liaise with university-retained counsel for H-1 and PERM applications

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s required, Master’s preferred; studying, working, living abroad and/or experience in college student advising may substitute for some education requirement
  • 3 years of professional experience in higher education
  • Commitment to international education and the promotion of cross-cultural understanding
  • Strong oral and written communication to engage people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Experience with Terra Dotta and/or other SaaS study abroad Systems preferred
  • Experience as DSO/ARO in SEVIS or evidence of training in those areas through NAFSA preferred
  • Per U.S. immigration regulations, must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. lawful Permanent Resident.
