Programs

The programs offered by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs are designed to help students become successful members of the Illinois Wesleyan community and to increase retention rates among minority students.

MALANA Orientation (Incoming First Year Students Only)

MALANA  is an acronym used to refer to Illinois Wesleyan's racially underrepresented student population, specifically Multiracial, African-American, Latino - American, Asian- American, and Native American Students. MALANA Orientation is a 3 day event which allows incoming MALANA students the opportunity to meet current students, faculty, and staff. The purpose of MALANA Orientation is to provide critical tools and resources to students that will assist them in achieving a successful and productive first year experience.

Summer Enrichment Program

The program is 10 weeks in duration and focuses on three major areas: academic, professional, and personal growth.  As participants of the program, students will have formal training and there will be at least one volunteer project.  These activities will be designed to enhance students' team building and leadership skills.  In addition, for those who successfully complete the program, a scholarship will be awarded.

GUIDE Mentoring Program

The purpose of this program is to assist first year students with their transition to college by creating a supportive and affirming environment. GUIDE is an opportunity to acquaint first year MALANA students with our surrounding community by partnering them with minority professionals in the area.  These relationships are just one of the many layers of support for first year students.

IWU Safe Zone

The IWU Safe Zone Program creates an opportunity for Illinois Wesleyan community members to reduce homophobia and heterosexism on campus. IWU Safe Zone empowers students, faculty, and staff members to serve as resources for members of the campus community who are interested in becoming more knowledgeable about sexual orientation and gender identity. IWU Safe Zone also provides LGBT students and employees with easily identifiable and supportive spaces to feel comfortable and safe in a confidential environment.
