Policies and Guidelines

For Students:

   1.  Appointments. The Writing Center accepts and encourages appointments with tutors. All appointments are made through our online appointment service; the link for that service is on the Writing Center's home page. Students need to register for this service; you don't need to use your university email password when registering but you must have an IWU email account. Be sure to look for a confirmation email to complete the registration process. Tutorials are usually 30 minutes long; longer blocs of time will be allotted depending on the paper length. Tutorials are usually scheduled on the hour or half-hour. The appointment system will send a confirmation email after you make an appointment. Students should cancel their appointments through the online system if they are unable to keep them. Students who miss three appointments will be warned that they may lose their right to make appointments and must seek walk-in sessions. Students are also encouraged to upload long papers a day before their tutoring sessions if at all possible in order to allow the tutor time to read carefully. Tutors will read only one paper per session. Portfolios as a whole are not appropriate for tutoring sessions; however, tutors will look at individual papers in a portfolio during a session and will be happy to assist writers drafting an introduction, reflection, or overview to the portfolio.

   2. Notification of instructors. Students have the right to have their instructors notified about their visit to the Writing Center. Should a student elect to notify his/her instructor, the tutor and the student will negotiate the description of the session. Notification of the session will be sent out via email to the faculty member within one week.

   3. Holding for late appointments. Tutors will wait at least five minutes for students who have previously made appointments. After five minutes, if walk-in student is waiting for tutoring, that student will be given priority.

   4. Take-home essay exams. The standing policy of the Writing Center is not to assist students with take-home essay exams. However, if the Writing Coordinator has received email or written permission from the instructor to give tutoring assistance to students with take-home exams, tutors will aid those students. If a student comes to the Writing Center for help on a take-home exam after approval from the instructor, verification of the visit will automatically be sent to the instructor.

For Faculty:

   1. Whole class visits. While the Writing Center encourages whole-class visits to the Center as a means of promoting the Center and encouraging its use, such visits need to be planned ahead of time with the Writing Coordinator. It is not practicable for tutors to conduct tutoring sessions with large numbers of students. A good alternative would be to arrange with tutors to conduct specific writing-related sessions in the classroom, such as peer revision, small-group tutoring, etc.
