Outlines

An outline is basically the plan of a paper, and it is used in order to structure the ideas in the paper more effectively.

The most common type of outline is the Alphanumeric one. The formatting follows these characters, in this order (Purdue OWL):

·        Roman Numerals

·        Capitalized Letters

·        Arabic Numerals

·        Lowercase Letters

For more ‘informal’ outlines, one can use bullets or numbers. The outline can be a Full Sentence one or only a partial sentence one, depending on the assignment.

Questions to consider when creating an outline:

·        What is the assignment? (in other words, what do I have to do?)

·        What is the purpose of this essay?

·        Who is the intended audience for this essay?

·        What is the essay's thesis statement? (what am I arguing?)
