The fitness class portion of the IWU Wellness program provides group fitness class opportunities to faculty, staff, retirees, and their immediate family members free of charge and at convenient times over the lunch hour and immediately following the workday.

  • Yoga   

    Monday/Wednesday: 4:45 - 5:45 p.m.

    Shirk South East Classroom

    The journey that is yoga begins with this class as you learn (or review) basic asanas (postures). You will practice breath work and meditation in a relaxing environment while building strength, increasing flexibility and improving balance. This gentle class will be tailored to meet the needs of the individual yogis.

  • Zumba

    CNS Dance Studio A

    ZUMBA is a fun, Latin inspired dance fitness class that is taking the world by storm! The class incorporates exciting and unique Latin moves and rhythms into an effective fitness system. ZUMBA allows you to dance your way to a fitter you in a friendly party-like atmosphere!

  • Functional Training  

    Wednesday 12:15 - 12:50 p.m.

    Shirk Fitness Center or Shirk South East Classroom

    This class will introduce the concept of functional training and teach exercises that will not only increase muscular strength and endurance, but also improve balance, agility and stamina by mimicking everyday movement patterns. Various training systems and modalities will be explored including resistance bands and free weights, with an emphasis on safety through proper execution.

  • Strength and Stretch  

    Tuesday/Thursday 4:45 - 5:30 p.m

    Shirk South East Classroom

    This strength circuit class incorporates single and multi-joint resistance exercises for all the major muscle groups using body weight, dumbbells and much more.  The class will finish with progressive stretching for improved flexibility.

  • Tai Chi  

    Saturday 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.

    Shirk Activity Center or Quad

    Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese blend of exercise, meditation and self-defense. Take the opportunity to explore the gentle flowing movement of Tai Chi to improve balance, increase strength and range of motion and enhance the immune system.

  • Mat Fusion   

    Monday 12:15- 12:50 p.m.

    Shirk S.E. Classroom

    This class is a blend of yoga, Pilates, and strength training, designed to strengthen and tone the body through low-impact movements.  It is a full body workout that will build long and lean muscles as well as improve range of motion, balance, and flexibility. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

  • "Stick" Boxing   

    Friday 4:45-5:45 p.m.

    Shirk S.E. Classroom

    This class will work on technique mastery and cardio conditioning for a fun take on SE Asian Cardio Kickboxing.  Each class will incorporate fighting sticks and pads along with elements from Filipino Kali, Muay Thai boxing, Jeet Kune Do and Pencack Silat  There will be a warm up/technique demonstration followed by a workout and a cooldown round or two.
