Spring 2017 Class Descriptions

  • Fitness Basics   

    Monday 12:15- 12:50 p.m.

    Shirk Activity Center

    This class will focus on the fundamentals of strength training. Participants will learn proper technique and correct form to ensure workouts are effective as well as safe. We will focus on one exercise per class and perfect our technique with intervals of cardio and core strength training in between. This class will benefit experienced fitness participants as much as those brand new to lifting. If you have been waiting for the right time to start working out, it is now!

  • Yoga I   The Basics

    Monday/Wednesday: 4:45 - 5:45 pm 

    Tuesday/Thursday: 12:15 - 12:50 pm

    Shirk South East Classroom (New Shirk Addition)

    The journey that is yoga begins with this class as you learn (or review) basic asanas (postures). You will practice breath work and meditation in a relaxing environment while building strength, increasing flexibility and improving balance. This gentle class will be tailored to meet the needs of the individual yogis.

  • Yoga II  Beyond the Basics

    Thursdays 4:45-5:45 p.m.

    Shirk South East Classroom (New Shirk Addition)

    In Yoga II you will step up the intensity a bit with this gentle intermediate-level class.  The postures (asanas) are practiced in a  flowing style known as Vinyasa. The class will work with some finer points of alignment and practice holding the postures a bit longer to develop strength and focus. This class will encourage self-exploration through yoga asanas, breathing, relaxation and meditation.

  • Pilates  

    Monday/ Wednesday/ Friday 12:15 - 12:50 p.m.

    Shirk South East Classroom (New Shirk Addition)

    Come invigorate your mind, strengthen your core and condition your body using the principles of Pilates. Pilates teaches body awareness and good posture while increasing core strength, flexibility and agility. Class will focus on classic mat Pilates using stability balls and hand weights to tone arms, legs and upper back as well as the core, taking you through everything you need to achieve a fit and healthy body.

    This class is guided by motivational DVD's. You will have the opportunity to increase your spinning intensity or work at your own pace in a friendly welcoming atmosphere.

  • Strength and Stretch   

    Tuesday 4:45 - 5:45 p.m.

    CNS Dance Studio B

    This strength circuit class incorporates single and multi-joint resistance exercises for all the major muscle groups using resistance bands, dumbbells and much more.  The class will finish with progressive stretching for improved flexibility.

  • Zumba  

    Monday/Wednesday: 4:45 - 5:45 p.m.

    CNS Dance Studio A

    ZUMBA is a fun, Latin inspired dance fitness class that is taking the world by storm! The class incorporates exciting and unique Latin moves and rhythms into an effective fitness system. ZUMBA allows you to dance your way to a fitter you in a friendly party-like atmosphere!

  • Functional Training  

    Wednesday/ Friday 12:15 - 12:45 p.m.

    Shirk Fitness Center

    This class will introduce the concept of functional training and teach exercises that will not only increase muscular strength and endurance, but also improve balance, agility and stamina by mimicking everyday movement patterns. Various training systems and modalities will be explored including resistance bands and free weights, with an emphasis on safety through proper execution.

  • Tai Chi Yang Long Form 

    Saturday 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.

    Shirk Activity Center or Quad

    Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese blend of exercise, meditation and self-defense. Take the opportunity to explore the gentle flowing movement of Tai Chi to improve balance, increase strength and range of motion and enhance the immune system.

  •   Southeast Asian Martial Arts       

    Monday 7:15-8:15pm

    February 6 - May 8

    Shirk South East Classroom (New Shirk Addition)

    This class will blend various martial arts from the Philippines (Kali), Indonesia and Malaysia (Silat) and Thailand (Thai Boxing). Drills and techniques for application in self-defense will be taught in a fun and welcoming atmosphere.
