11 a.m., Flag pole, Eckley Quad (Rain location: Evelyn Chapel) – Veterans Day Observance – A brief ceremony at the flag pole will recognize all veterans, particularly those in our IWU family who have served or will serve our country in the United States Armed Forces. The Chapel bells will ring at 10:50 a.m. and we will begin the ceremony at the flag pole on the Quad at 11 a.m.
11 a.m.-1 p.m., Dugout, Memorial Center – International Education Week – To show appreciation for IWU's incredible international programs, the International Office will be in the Dugout during lunch hours to play trivia and offer tasty international candies.
12 p.m., Davidson Room, Memorial Center – Non-Org: Kathleen O'Gorman – From the time former Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the Trump administration’s zero-tolerance policy concerning undocumented immigrants on April 6, 2018, until the president ended the policy on June 20, 2018, thousands of immigrant children were separated from their parents at the U.S. border. Thousands of other children have come to the U.S. by themselves, making the trip from places like El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. Professor of English Kathleen O’Gorman has volunteered since this past summer with the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law, the only agency that has rights to interview these children and scrutinize the conditions in which they are housed. She has made several site visits as part of an interview team and has spoken with a number of the children—those separated from parents and those who came alone. While there is much that she is not able to disclose, in the interest of protecting the children, there are some aspects of the visits she can discuss.

4 p.m., Social Justice Reading Room, The Ames Library – Careers with Social Justice NGOs – The Center for Human Rights and Social Justice and the Hart Career Center will co-sponsor a forum on career opportunities with social justice-related non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Meeting in front of the library’s Social Justice Reading Room, we will discuss strategies for pursuing NGO work, the kinds of academic skills and qualifications NGOs look for in their staffing, and opportunities for summer internship work with selected NGOs. In that vein, we will also promote the IWU Fund for Human Rights, Environmental Sustainability, and Social Justice, with regard to the funding opportunities it presents and the kinds of initiatives it has sponsored in the past. 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Dugout and Bertholf Commons, Memorial Center – Global Titans Enlighten! – The 2018-2019 IWU Global Titans will be circulating in the eating areas of the Memorial Center, speaking with students about global issues pertaining to the clothing industry. Their motto, "Globally Aware, Intellectually Dare, Compassionately Share," depends on sharing their concerns with the IWU campus community, to make more people aware of the consequences of their actions within the context of our increasingly globalized lived experience. 4 p.m., 102, State Farm Hall – November IDES - "Keeping Aristotle Out of Aristotelian Ethics" – The Great Chain of Being is a powerfully compelling image of the natural world that has its roots in the thought of Plato and Aristotle. But the Great Chain’s picture of the world as harmonious, orderly, and replete with meaning is starkly at odds with contemporary, scientific (especially Darwinian) conceptions of nature. Can elements of Aristotle’s ethical outlook survive the collapse of the Great Chain paradigm to inform moral thought today? Guest speaker Kristina Gerhman will consider some of the ways in which contemporary secular moral thought still depends, for better and for worse, on Aristotelian ideas about humanity and our place in nature.
