Fond Farewell |

After 10 years at the Hart Career Center, Laurie Diekhoff departed IWU this month. We appreciate her years of outstanding service to Illinois Wesleyan and wish her well on her next chapter.
Diekhoff told colleagues, "I spent 10 great years at the Career Center, enjoying my work, my colleagues, and the many relationships I have made on campus and in the community as a result of this position. Assisting students with their career development plans, helping employers fulfill their hiring needs, developing new programs, and contributing to the ongoing success of the Hart Career Center has been quite rewarding!"
Until her replacement joins IWU later this month, questions can be addressed by Beth Madigan, emadigan@iwu.edu, ext. 1337. |

- Rui Cao '18 co-authored, with former IWU faculty member Pavel Naumov, "Budget-Constrained Dynamics in Multiagent Systems,” which has been accepted at the 26th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI 2017) in Melbourne, Australia, Aug. 19-25.
Naumov noted that the title of the paper comes as no surprise, given that Rui is a computer science and accounting double major. Naumov said
IJCAI is a premier event in the field of Artificial Intelligence, assigned the highest ranking in each year that CORE rankings of computer science conferences have been published. Out of this year's 2,540 submissions for the conference, only 660 were accepted.
- Adjunct Assistant Professor Chemistry Kathleen A. House and Scholar in Residence J. E. House have published "Thermodynamics of Dissolution of Urea in Water, Alcohols, and their Mixtures" in The Journal of Molecular Liquids, 2017, Vol. 242, 428-432.
- B. Charles and Joyce Eichhorn Ames Professor of Physics Gabe Spalding gave a talk on July 24 at the national meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers, about Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPADs), calling for shared dialogue regarding their promise for use in the undergraduate physics curriculum.
This week, Spalding chairs the annual conference on Optical Trapping & Optical Micromanipulation, where coverage ranges from a special tutorial session on optomechanics (toward, or in, the quantum limit), to sessions on the fundamental limits of information, thermodynamics and the statistical mechanics of small systems.
