12:10 p.m., Turfler Room, Memorial Center – Non-org: Transmitting Ideology through Image and Text: Soviet Era Children’s Picture Books, 1920s-1930s  – Isaac Funk Professor of German & Russian Marina Balina will discuss her research. Children’s literature was so important to the Soviet state that it created an elaborate superstructure consisting of writers, illustrators, critics, librarians, psychologists, publishers, and other professionals engaged in the business of developing, studying, and regulating Soviet childhood reading. From the very moment of its formation, Soviet children’s literature became preoccupied with the development of specific visual language aimed at children. A vehicle of ideology, the picture book for the young Soviet reader became an important cultural phenomenon, despite its perceived simplicity and often minimalist techniques. Major Soviet artists and writers contributed to this genre, creating a unique assemblage of sophisticated visual formats for the promotion of state socialism, thus developing an impressive dual verbal-visual representation of the communist imaginary.

She has guided passage of legislation such as Illinois' ban on microbeads in personal care products, funding legislation for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and numerous bills on recycling and composting, among many others. Some argue that students today resist labels associated with sexual and gender identity. This is maybe a simplistic response to the increasingly complex ways that students identify as somewhere in the middle of gay/straight and male/female. If you have questions about what it means when students use terms like bi/pansexual, non-binary, queer, genderqueer and fluid, this is a safe space to learn more, get answers and become equipped to support students fully in pursuit of communities of respect and inclusion. 4 p.m., Fellowship Area (basement), Evelyn Chapel – ReligiosiTEA: Religious Diversity and Attitudes on IWU's Campus – In Spring 2015, IWU students were invited to take a Campus Religious and Spiritual Life Climate survey, administered by Interfaith Youth Core to more than 16,000 students at 61 colleges and universities. This survey assesses students' perceptions, attitudes, and experiences of worldview diversity and interfaith engagement. Come for a conversation about the results and share your stories. All students are invited.

• Associate Professor of Sociology Meghan Burke has been invited to give a keynote address, "Fostering Empathy in the Classroom: Teaching a Critical Race Perspective in a Climate of Anxiety" at the American Sociological Association Alpha Kappa Delta Workshop on Teaching and Learning, which will take place at the Midwest Sociological Society meeting in Chicago on March 23.


• Assistant Professor of Psychology Ellen Furlong will present a talk, “Comparative Cognition: What Animals Can Teach Us About our Minds,” on Feb. 12 at Illinois State University.


• B. Charles and Joyce Eichhorn Ames Professor of Physics Gabe Spalding gave an invited colloquium on Jan. 22 at the University of Dundee, “Spreading Information of the ‘3rd Age’ of Ultrafast Imaging.”


• Denise Anderson '92 was named Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies for the College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences at Clemson University.
