Jason Students' Technique May Shed Light on Avian Evolutionary History
Biology majors Jason Murphy '14 and Mark Swanson '14 developed a research technique they described in one of the world's top ornithological journals.

Rumeng Chinese Delegation to Visit Illinois Wesleyan
A delegation from Beijing Union University will visit campus in a faculty-student exchange, participating in a musical performance and Lunar New Year celebration.

Pins Guzman '16 and Cervantes' 16 Awarded Gilman Scholarships
Juniors Nancy Guzman and Cristina Cervantes will receive the Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship to study abroad this spring.

Justice Student Art Recognized at Juried Exhibition

Amanda Hopkins Awarded 2015 Nurse Educator Fellowship
Wesleyan's Amanda Hopkins has been awarded the 2015 Nurse Educator Fellowship from the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

 

Sports

The women's indoor track and field team placed first in the 12-team Titan Open at the Shirk Center on Saturday, Jan. 31, while the men's team finished seventh.

7 p.m., 122, State Farm Hall – Safe Zone Workshop – The IWU Safe Zone Program creates an opportunity for Illinois Wesleyan community members to reduce homophobia and heterosexism on campus. The workshop explores lesbian, gay and bisexual identity, culture, gender, gender identity and the experiences of transgender people. 12:10 p.m., Davidson Room, Memorial Center – Non-org: "Confidential Searches for Chief Academic Officers" – With the upcoming presidential search making their topic particularly relevant to campus, Associate Professor of English Mike Theune and Professor of Computer Science & Director of Cognitive Science Joerg Tiede will report on a survey regarding the prevalence of confidential searches – searches in which there are no open fora for finalists on campus – for chief academic officers at liberal arts colleges. They conducted the survey following the experience with IWU's provost search, where a search consultant recommended leaving open the possibility of a confidential search. The faculty subsequently voted to express opposition to such a search, and the search was conducted with an open final phase. Their main finding is that confidential searches are quite rare at institutions such as Illinois Wesleyan. They will also report on a recent AAUP policy document that provides advice on the conduct of presidential and other searches.

Announcements

Collegiate Choir to Perform with The King's Singers

On Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts, the Illinois Wesleyan University Collegiate Choir will collaborate for the second time with The King's Singers, the world-renowned male sextet from England.

The ensembles will present the world premiere of Arise My Dove, a three-movement work by Philip Lawson commissioned by the Collegiate Choir. Lawson, a former member of The King's Singers, set three poems from James Joyce's collection Chamber Music for this composition. This commission is the first accepted by The King's Singers from an American collegiate choral ensemble.

The Collegiate Choir will also perform Salmo de Alabanza by Andrew Rindfleisch. For ticket information, please call (309) 434-2777 or check online at the BCPA website.


English as a Second Language Service


The new English as a Second Language Service at IWU seeks to support the University's international students and their academic and professional needs by providing ESL instruction and help with academic writing, reading and speaking. Our primary goal is to enhance the learning experience of international students and support the University's community.

• Kyle Connour '15 and Tyler Wright '16 are the first authors, along with Chair and Professor of Physics Linda French, on the first piece of research concerning observations made at Illinois Wesleyan's Mark Evans Observatory. Their work is published in the Minor Planet Bulletin, the official publication of the Minor Planets section of the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers (ALPO).

• Internationally known organist Marilyn Keiser '63 will perform a recital May 15 as the culminating event of the 2014-2015 Friends of Music Series, which also completes a year of recitals dedicating a Frances Goll Mills Memorial Pipe Organ at First Congregational Church, Saginaw, Michigan.

• Max Lewendel '03, artistic director of Icarus Theatre Collective in London, England, is producing a successful touring production of The Trials of Galileo, now booked at the Hope Theatre in Islington.

• M3 Insurance recently announced Amy Olson '90 as a new company shareholder. She is a senior account executive and partner in the company's Madison office.

Health Bites

Wellness Workshop:
D.I.Y Chocolate Truffle Class

Date: Thursday, Feb. 12
Time: 6-8 p.m.
Where: home of Melinda Baur
Fee: $10 (covers chocolate and supplies)


Assistant Professor of Chemistry Melinda Baur and Chemistry & Biology Stockroom Manager Cindy Honegger will teach the basics of chocolate confectionery by making chocolate truffles.

This two-hour class will cover types of chocolate, basic molding techniques, ganache fillings, and chocolate tempering plus a little chocolate history and some chocolate chemistry!

Participants will take home 10-12 truffles (for themselves or perhaps a special Valentine) and a mold for making more delicious chocolate morsels.

Please register by Feb. 9. Detailed location information will be given after registration.
