The largest new class of international students in University history are getting acclimated to life on campus, with help from a cadre of veteran staff and students.

 Smith '14 Works as Midwifery Intern in Africa
In her third experience delivering international healthcare, Hannah Smith spent three weeks this summer as a midwifery intern at Mount Meru Regional Hospital in Arusha, Tanzania.
 Wainwright Wins Starkey Service Award
Manager of Maintenance Services George Wainwright was honored for his outstanding service to the University community with the Starkey Award.

First day of classes
• 4 p.m., Davidson Room, Memorial Center – Meet the Class of 2018 – Presentation for Faculty and Staff – Tony Bankston, dean of Admissions, will provide an overview of the academic profile and demographics of our first-year students; Chandra Shipley, director of Academic Advising/coordinator of Disability Services, will discuss advising tips to meet the needs of our new students; Annorah Moorman, assistant dean and director of Counseling Services, will focus on the psychological and emotional aspects of our incoming students; and Stacey Shimizu, director of the International Office, will discuss immediate academic needs of our international students. This presentation is co-sponsored by the Council for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETAL) and the Mellon Center.
Wednesday, Aug. 27
• 12 p.m., Turfler Room, Memorial Center – Hands Up, Don't Shoot! A Conversation About Ferguson – On Aug. 9, teenager Mike Brown was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Mo., not so far away from us. Protests have ensued around the country. Join us as we review the facts and discuss how it impacts our community. Sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
• 4 p.m., First floor, CLA – Reception Honoring Sister City Shinto Shrine – A wine and cheese reception hosted by the Bloomington-Normal Sister Cities Committee and Illinois Wesleyan's Asian Studies Team will celebrate the new home of the Mikoshi, the Shinto Shrine donated by our sister city, Asahikawa, in Hokkaido, Japan. It is now in the study area on the first floor of CLA. Invited guests include the mayors of the two cities and officials from area schools.

• 4 p.m., Eckley Quadrangle – RSO Fair – An opportunity for students to learn about Registered Student Organizations on campus.

• Professor of Art Miles Bair's painting, "The Stream," was recently selected for the Mayo Clinic Collection in Rochester, Minn. In addition, Bair currently has four new paintings on display at the Haen Gallery in Asheville, N.C.
• Fern Rosetta Sherff Professor of Music David Vayo and IWU alumna Nancy Steele Brokaw '71 took part in Fort Worth Opera's "Frontiers" showcase from May 5-10. Excerpts from their show Fertile Ground were performed by professional singers for an audience of producers, critics and patrons.
Vayo conducted the world premiere of his Sandlot for two trumpets and percussion during the conference of the International Trumpet Society in Valley Forge, Pa. on May 23.
In early July, Vayo spent a week in St. John's, Newfoundland, as an invited participant in the Sound Symposium festival. His Stations for violin, piano and electronics was premiered by the Poltergeist Trio, and his Small Change, written for the festival's Harbour Symphony project, was performed on the horns of ships in St. John's Harbour. Vayo also improvised on two performances with Sound Symposium participants.
• Jonathan Daly '11 worked as orchestra director at Bloomington's Parkside Junior High School while completing his master's in music performance at Illinois State University. Daly, who studied abroad in Prague while at IWU, has returned there this summer to teach English while learning more about music.
His plans are outlined in a surprise opportunity to be featured on the Facebook site, Humans of Prague.
• Larry Neumann, Jr. '81was nominated for a Jeff Award for actor in a principal role for "In God's Hat," a production with Profiles Theatre. In addition, First Folio Theatre, with Alison C. Vesely '79 as artistic director and co-founder, is up for multiple awards.

Campus Bicycling Survey
As part of its review process for possible designation as a Bicycle-Friendly University, the League of American Bicyclists asks Illinois Wesleyan to distribute this survey. Any students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members who are familiar with the bicycle programs and amenities on campus are invited to participate.
In addition to its use in the League's award decision, the input received through this survey will be included (anonymously) in a feedback report to the IWU Bike Committee.
The 2014 Bicycle Friendly University awards will be publicly announced on Campus Sustainability Day, Oct. 22.
