Course Description

Our Spring 2020 Special Topics class is entitled "The Latinx Experience in the Americas."

Latinos represent the largest racial/ethnic immigrant group in the U.S. and the Midwest. This class will address the migration experiences to and in the Midwest, featuring Chicago as a site for detailed exploration. We will address immigration, community formation, immigrant rights movements, citizenship, and identity issues through reading and discussing recently published ethnographic monographs.

About Dr. Maura Toro-Morn

"The Latinx Experience in the Americas" will be taught by Dr. Maura Toro-Morn the director of the Latinx Studies program at Illinois State Universty (ISU). Dr. Toro-Morn was born and raised in Puerto Rico. She migrated to the United States in the early 1980s to pursue graduate work in the Midwest. She has a been a member of the Bloomington/Normal community for over twenty years and is an expert in Latinx Sociology and Immigration Studies.
