Senior Paige Buschman has been named a Student Laureate by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois, in recognition of excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities.
JonathanProvost to Become President at Susquehanna University
Jonathan Green, provost and dean of the faculty at Illinois Wesleyan since 2011, has been named the next president at Susquehanna University, a private liberal arts university in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.
RebeccaGearhart Mafazy Receives Exemplary Teacher Award
Associate Professor of Anthropology Rebecca Gearhart Mafazy is being recognized for her excellence in teaching; civility and concern for students and colleagues; commitment to values-centered education; and service to students, the institution, and community.

12 p.m., Davidson Room, Memorial Center – Non-Org: "Creating an Inclusive Teaching Environment: Successful Strategies" – Presented by Assistant Professor of Nursing Amanda Hopkins.


Daily through Wednesday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Dugout Exhibit Space, Memorial Center – Humane Society Supply Drive – The campus Lend a Paw Project will be collecting items to donate to the Humane Society of Central Illinois. They will collect items from the wish list below as well as monetary donations that will be used to buy gift cards to pet supply stores and bags of dog food.

Wish List: generic powder laundry detergent; bleach; antibacterial dishwashing soap; paper towels; hand sanitizer (large refill bottles); dog/cat toys & stuffed animals - washable; dog toys for large dogs; garbage bags - 13 gallon tall kitchen; Ziplock bags - snack size; toilet bowl cleaner; Clorox wipes; old towels/sheets/pillowcases/blankets.

 

4 p.m., 202, State Farm Hall – Sociology Colloquium: “DREAMing and Designing Spaces of Hope: Black Women Transcending Neighborhoods with High Levels of Violence” – The sociology research colloquium series will host Ruby Mendenhall, Associate Professor in Sociology, African American Studies, Urban and Regional Planning, and Social Work at the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign.

Wednesday, Nov. 30

11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Memorial Center – BAC and Drug Tabling Event – Stop by and have a beer! Join the Peer Educators of SOCA (Students Organizing Campus Awareness) and Counseling and Consultation Services for a root beer float and pick up a Blood Alcohol Content card to help you learn how to drink responsibly if you choose to drink. There will also be information about different drugs, how these drugs look and how they affect the body.

Thursday, Dec. 1

4-8 p.m., 101, State Farm Hall – Write for Rights by IWU Amnesty International  – The campus community is invited to join Amnesty's annual Write for Rights event, writing to affect the fates of prisoners arrested for their political beliefs and falsely accused for a crime they did not commit; pushing for the government to recognize Native Americans' rights to their land in Canada; helping protect a woman's family from mining companies in Peru; and pushing to educate and protect people with albinism from others trying to kill them in Malawi, Africa. You're welcome to pop in and out from 4 to 8.


6:30 p.m., Evelyn Chapel – Light the Night: A Multicultural Celebration of the Season of Light

Friday, Dec. 2

11 a.m., Lobby, Joyce Eichhom Ames School of Art Building – Student & Faculty Art Sale – Come and purchase one-of-a-kind art from School of Art students and faculty. Ceramics, printmaking and glass will be featured. Great for your holiday shopping! Come early for the best selection.


7 p.m., 101, State Farm Hall – Physics Phun Night – Grab 1 or 2 friends to complete your team and try to win prizes. This event is open to all majors, regardless of science knowledge; there will be trivia about IWU and areas of physics explored in our classes. There will also be challenges testing your engineering skills. Homemade snacks will be provided; hosted by the Society of Physics Students.

7 p.m., The Underground, Memorial Center – Friday Features – Sponsored monthly by the Office of Student Activities, featuring various forms of talent from our students.

  • Abstracted Landscapes, an exhibition of paintings by IWU Director of Grants and Foundation Relations Dick Folse, will be on display Dec. 2-31 at the The McLean County Arts Center, 601 N. East Street in downtown Bloomington. A free and public opening reception will be on Friday, Dec. 2, 5 - 7 p.m.

  • IWU Provost Jonathan Green will play Mother Ginger in the upcoming 35th annual Twin Cities Ballet production of The Nutcracker at Braden Auditorium at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, and Sunday, Dec. 4. Tickets are available at the Braden Box Office and through Ticketmaster (extra charge applied). James Plath, R. Forrest Colwell Endowed Chair and Professor of English, is also in the show as a "party parent."

  • Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Bob Mangialardi headlines the cast of the Holiday Spectacular, written by Nancy Steele Brokaw '71 and featuring recorded harp music by  Ted Nichelson '93.

  • Nick Anderson '14, an associate at MorganMyers, was a panelist at CR Magazine’s COMMIT! Forum in New York, discussing the future of Corporate Social Responsibility.

  • The Illinois Wesleyan Circle K Club helped refurbish the Towanda bike trail on Oct. 22 as part of the Kiwanis One Day event. Four members from the club, along with members from the Illinois Wesleyan Alpha Phi Omega chapter, helped with painting murals and tables, planting trees and mulching.
    In addition, the IWU Circle K Club raised $150 for Trick or Treat for Unicef and on Nov. 6, members packed 12 shoeboxes full of school supplies, toys, T-shirts, and more to give to kids in need as part of Operation Christmas Child, a program developed by Samaritan’s Purse.

Snow and Ice Procedures

As we are approaching the snow and ice season, the Physical Plant would like to review the procedures for getting those work orders to us. Please do not put those requests into School Dude. Please call us at the Physical Plant at 556-3066 during our regular hours: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. After hours, please call Security at 556-1111 for an emergency and they will contact someone from Physical Plant.

Milestones Shoe Drive

Do you ever look in your closet and see shoes you just don’t need anymore? Instead of throwing out your old shoes this winter, consider donating them to someone in need. Milestones Early Learning Center and Preschool will be holding a shoe fundraiser through Dec.14. They are accepting men’s, women’s and children’s new or gently used shoes of all kinds and sizes. Donation boxes on campus will be set up in the lobby of Holmes Hall.

Anti-Procrastination Project

From 7-11 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6, Outreach Librarian/Professor Sue Anderson and the Writing Center staff will be in The Ames Library to support students in completing projects/papers/videos etc. 

 

Starting a paper and don’t know where to begin? Anderson can talk you through the research process and help you find just the right articles. Writing Center tutors and Joel Haefner will be on hand to review drafts of papers. Poster printing on demand will be available from 7-10 p.m.

 

Two massage therapists will be available from 7-9 p.m. to relieve stress; sign-up sheets are on the door of Room 139 for 10-minute slots. 

 

We want to help students finish the semester projects due before finals. Come to Ames to GET IT DONE! Snacks and de-stress fun will also be in the mix.
