National Bike Challenge
The National Bike Challenge is a friendly nationwide competition between communities, employers and individuals, aimed at uniting 75,000 riders to pedal 35 million miles from May 1 until Sept. 30. Last year, Bloomington/Normal ranked sixth in the country per capita.
Free raffle prizes for participants at IWU have been donated by Bloomington Cycle & Fitness, Vitesse Cycle Shop and Wilson's Cycle.

• Isaac Funk Professor of German and Russian and Director of International Studies Marina Balina received a research grant from the International Youth Library, Munich, Germany, the world's largest library for international children's and youth literature. She will spend four months working and researching materials for her new book on the history of Russian children's literature.
Balina also published two articles:
- "Overcoming the Past through Childhood Reminiscences in Contemporary Russian Autobiographical Prose" in AutobiografiЯ: Journal on Life Writing and the Representation of the Self in Russian Culture, v.3, Padova University Press, pp. 185-213.

• Earl and Marian A. Beling Professor of Natural Sciences Tian-Xiao He and one of his students, Tung Nguyen '15, published "Construction of spline type orthogonal scaling functions and wavelets," Journal of Applied Functional Analysis, 10 (2015), No. 3-4, 189-203.
Nguyen has been awarded a full scholarship to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics.
• University Librarian Karen Schmidt received the Multicultural Leadership Program's Community Service Award.
• Ruomeng Zhang '17 won second prize for her research presentation at the Student Research Symposium at the Spring Meeting of the Illinois Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers (ISAAPT). Her research focuses on coupled oscillating chemical reactions.
• "For Out of the Heart," a film by Mike Mayo '02, is being screened as part of the Illinois International Film Festival in Aurora at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 2. Mayo's journey in making the film was featured in the Fall 2014 Illinois Wesleyan University Magazine.
