Inauguration Inspiring Alumni to Share Stories During Inaugural Week
Six successful alumni will speak during an Alumni Showcase on April 1, as part of events surrounding the inauguration of President Eric R. Jensen.

The six alumni are: actor Kevin Dunn '77; hedge fund analyst Marcus Dunlop ’08; broadcast journalist and documentarian Demetria Kalodimos ’81; Hall of Fame sportswriter Dave Kindred ’63; healthcare executive and policy advisor Stephen Ondra, M.D. ’80; and immigration attorney Carlina Tapia-Ruano ’77. Video of the showcase will be available later on demand.


The inauguration ceremony at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 2 will be live streamed. Use the hashtag #ilwesprez to share on social media.

12:10 p.m., Turfler Room, Memorial Center – Non-org: Curriculum Council Discussion on AP Credit – The Illinois legislature has passed a new law requiring all public institutions in the state to accept an Advanced Placement score of 3 and above. This law does not affect private institutions like IWU, but Dean of Enrollment Management Bob Murray will join us to discuss the possible impact on our applicant pool. Registrar Leslie Betz will also be on hand to illustrate how Illinois State University and University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign are handling it. Curriculum Council must decide whether IWU should change our policy of only accepting 4 or 5 AP scores. Faculty input is important.

 

4 p.m., 202, State Farm Hall – Sociology & Anthropology Colloquium – Maura Toro-Morn, professor of sociology and anthropology and director of Latin American Studies at Illinois State University, will give a public lecture titled "Migration and Gendered Webs of Obligation: Caring for my Elderly Puerto Rican Mother in a Transnational Context." Free pizza will follow.

 

7 p.m., C101, CNS – Tom Ulrich, Nature Photographer – This year's presentation, "Stock and What-Not," will feature photos of nature from around the world from Ulrich's 40 years as a nature photographer. His narration includes insight on photo technique and animal behavior and is always riddled with humor. Presented by Sugar Grove Nature Center, this event is free with a university ID.

11 a.m., Young Main Lounge, Memorial Center – Walking the Labyrinth: A Religious Practice Old and New"Solvitur Ambulando... It is solved by walking" – St. Augustine. For centuries, meditative walking has been a part of many religious disciplines. Come and learn about the ways Christians have adopted and adapted this practice of walking the labyrinth. This interactive hour includes the option of walking a labyrinth set up in the Main Lounge. Part of the 2015-2016 series, "Intersections: A Walking Exploration of Contemporary Religious Practices," coordinated by Chair of Sociology/Anthropology & Professor of Anthropology Rebecca Gearhart, Chaplain Elyse Nelson Winger, and Multifaith Ambassador Karen Matkovich '16.

12:10 p.m., Turfler Room, Memorial Center – Non-org: "Summit on New Frontiers in the Study of Colorblind Racism" – On May 12-14, Illinois Wesleyan will host a national scholars' symposium, titled the Summit on New Frontiers in the Study of Colorblind Racism. This Summit will include a number of opportunities for campus and community engagement, and feature a keynote address by IWU alum Charlene Carruthers '07. Come learn more about what scholars typically mean by "colorblind racism," and learn more about ways that you can connect with this event and its visiting scholars during May Term, presented by Associate Professor of Sociology Meghan Burke. Staff, faculty and students are all welcome.
