NicoleJovicevic '16 Recognized as Lincoln Laureate
Senior Nicole Jovicevic was named a 2015 Student Laureate by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois in recognition of her academic achievements and extracurricular involvement.

The Fall 2015 Illinois Wesleyan University Magazine honors the careful planning and bold vision that marked the tenure of newly retired IWU president Richard F. Wilson.


Sports

•  The IWU women's soccer team scored a two-overtime victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Neis Field on Sunday, Nov. 15, and will advance to the sectional round next Saturday, Nov. 21, in St. Louis, Mo.

• Senior Erin McCarey has been selected as an individual qualifier for the 2015 Division III Women's Cross Country Championships, which will be on Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis.

• The volleyball team battled Carthage to five sets before being eliminated from the 2015 NCAA Division III regional tournament in the round of 32 at Van Noord Arena on the Calvin College campus in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Friday, Nov. 13.

8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Hansen Student Center – Bone Marrow Donor Drive – Come down to Hansen Student Center to add your name to the Bone Marrow Donor Registry. All you need to do is swab the inside of your cheeks to collect cells for tissue typing, and you have taken the first step toward saving someone's life. Sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega.

4 p.m., Beckman Auditorium, The Ames Library – The Ides Series: “The Western Classics in Modern China” – Shadi Bartsch-Zimmer, the Helen A. Regenstein Distinguished Service Professor of Classics at University of Chicago, will speak, sponsored by Greek and Roman Studies. In the space of the past century, Chinese scholars and thinkers have gone from finding our foundational Western texts inspirational to finding them short-sighted, obsessed with rationality, and responsible for the development of capitalism. Plato himself emerges from Chinese scholarship (somewhat unrecognizably) as the founding source of the West's worship of profit. This talk will investigate the meaning of these developments.

During this gathering, we will also hear voices of wisdom from various religious and secular traditions committed to justice, compassion, and peace.

11 a.m., Atrium, CNS – BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) and Drug Information Table – Stop by and have a beer! Join the Peer Educators of SOCA for a root-beer float and pick up a BAC card to help you learn how to drink responsibly if you choose to drink. There will also be information about different drugs, how these drugs look and how they affect the body. 4 p.m., Beckman Auditorium, The Ames Library – Struggles for Freedom Series: Saeid Golkar, "Manipulated Society: Paralyzing the Masses in Post-Revolutionary Iran" – Saeid Golkar, visiting fellow for Iran policy at The Chicago Council on Global Affairs and a lecturer for the Middle East and North African Studies Program at Northwestern University, will speak as part of a series of talks and films sponsored by the Political Science Department. These events are made possible through generous grants provided by the Betty Ritchie-Birrer '47 and Ivan Birrer Endowment Fund.

4 p.m., Basement / Fellowship Area, Evelyn Chapel – ReligiosiTEA – Come to Evelyn Chapel for late afternoon coffee, cookies, and conversation about spiritual life and your questions about life and faith along with students from various religious and non-religious traditions.

4 p.m., C102, CNS – A Biologist and a Statistician Walked Into a Bar... – Professor Olcay Akman of the Illinois State University Mathematics Department will discuss an artificial neural network cluster analysis method, called the Kohonen algorithm, which was implemented in a cross-disciplinary project with a group of biologists. During the field study part of the project, a not-so-uncommon sampling error was recognized, which required the development of a correction algorithm as well. This talk will be accessible to undergraduate students of both fields. This event is part of the Natural Science Colloquium Series with Earl H. & Marion A. Beling Lectures.

12 p.m., Wakeley Gallery, Joyce Eichhorn Ames School of Art – Text Talks: A Focus on Ancient Texts from the Hebrew Bible and Psalms – The campus community is invited to a discussion of what this collection of ancient hymns, prayers, and laments tell us about the nature of human suffering and the capacity to live authentically through it. Bottleneck Management, operated by three Illinois Wesleyan alumni – Chris Bisaillon ’93, Jason Akemann ’96 and Nate Hilding ’96 – was named among Restaurant Hospitality's top 25 multiconcept restaurant companies in the U.S. (Free digital subscription required.)

Illinois Wesleyan rates well on the College Scorecard recently released by the White House, which compares factors including six-year graduation rates, retention from freshman to sophomore year, repayment of loans, and post-graduation earnings and cost.

Assistant Director of Financial Aid Drew Reddington was among those recognized at the American Red Cross Central Illinois Saluting Our Heroes annual event. He received the Health and Safety Award for saving his wife's life when her heart stopped, by administering CPR until paramedics arrived.

An exhibit at Illinois Wesleyan's Ames School of Art shows the work of William Utermohlen, who continued painting after the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

• Associate Professor of Sociology Meghan Burke recently returned from a 15-day visiting scholar position at East China Normal University in Shanghai, China, where she gave two talks titled “The Spectre of a Global Society in American Political and Racial Discourse" and "Scrutinizing the Cosmopolitan Canopy in Chicago and Shanghai."

•  Assistant Professor of Philosophy Andrew Engen will speak on “Punishing the Oppressed and Valid Objections To Blame” on Dec. 4 at Illinois State University.

• Rachel Carreras '12 will star as Ayah in the Mad Cow Theatre production of "The Secret Garden" in Orlando, Nov. 20-Dec. 20.

•  Mary (Heaton) Carrick '93 starred as "Elle" in Opera Omaha's production of the Francis Poulenc operatic monologue, The Human Voice (La Voix Humaine), presented as part of National Opera Week.

•  Erin Sweeney '14 was named among the Professional Convention Management Association's "20 in Their Twenties" Class of 2016. This award recognizes the best and brightest young professionals in the industry from around the world.
