Drawing for Semester of Free Books

Students who complete all required actions on the checklist by Aug. 9 (or the listed due date) will be placed in a drawing with the grand prize of a free semester of books! The raffle will take place during the Titan Kick-Off Event on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Introducing TOLs

Meet the 2013 Titan Orientation Leaders (TOLs). New students will be assigned to groups that are led by TOLs, to get to know students on campus and assist with orientation.

Retired faculty member D. Paul Miller, age 95, captured seven gold medals and one bronze in the National Senior Olympics, setting three national records for his age group.

Men's Basketball Team Off to Costa Rica
The Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team will play a series of three exhibition games during an eight-day stay in Costa Rica from August 8-16.

Kat (Mason) McCreery, a 2004 Illinois Wesleyan graduate and former all-conference catcher for the Titans, has been named head softball coach.

• Ten Illinois Wesleyan women and one man have earned All-Academic honors for their combined efforts in competition and in the classroom from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

A west Bloomington neighborhood will see a wave of housing revitalization, thanks to a $1.5 million grant to a new community group whose partners include Illinois Wesleyan's Action Research Center (ARC) and the city of Bloomington.

ARC Coordinator Deborah Halperin said IWU involvement included Jenny Long '13, who helped with research as part of the University's grant writing seminar and interned with the West Bloomington Revitalization Project (WBRP) last spring; Matt Lalonde '14, whose Tool Library at the WBRP will gain support from grant funds; Professor of Political Science Greg Shaw, who is the housing chair of the WBRP; and University Librarian Karen Schmidt, city council member and WBRP board member.

• Chair and Professor of Educational Studies Irv Epstein published the chapter, "2011 Social Movements and Global Youth Protest: The Chilean and Spanish Cases," in Conversaciones Con Un Maestro (Liber Amicorum): Estudio interdiciplinar de disciples y colegas en homenaje al professor Dr. D. Jose Luis Garrido, Catedratico Emerito de Universidad. Ediciones Academicas, 2013, pp. 193-216.

Additionally, Epstein presented "The Whole World Is Watching Volume II: 2011 Student Protests in Chile, Spain, and the United States" at the XVth Comparative Education World Congress sponsored by the World Council of Comparative Education Societies in Buenos Aires on June 25.

• Professor of Physics Gabe Spalding was an invited panelist at the summer meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers for a session entitled, "Fighting over Lab Goals." He also organized and chaired a session on "Quantum & Condensed Matter Labs Beyond the First Year."

• Assistant Professor of Sociology Meghan Burke published "Colorblindness vs. Race-Consciousness – An American Ambivalence" in The Society Pages.

• An Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Scholarly Communications Roadshow, co-presented by Scholarly Communications Librarian Stephanie Davis-Kahl, was reported in the North American Serials Interest Group newsletter.

Josi Banales '14 participated in a prestigious and highly competitive Summer Research Opportunity Program at the Rackham Graduate School at the University of Michigan this summer, and wrote an entry on their blog about her experiences.

Tim Black '84 was the leading vote-getter this spring among three candidates for two six-year terms on the Black Hawk College Board of Trustees.

• With support from Kickstarter, Warwick Johnson '07 has released a comic book, The Empty Grave: Daddy's Little Girl.
