New Scholarship Program Supports Student Research, Creative Endeavors
The new Eckley Summer Scholars and Artists endowment supports summer research and creative activity for several students each year.

Soccer Player Kenny Named First Team Academic All-American
Daniel Kenny '13 became Illinois Wesleyan's114th Academic All-American, a total that is tied for 12th among all participating colleges and universities. 

Scholarships

Wesleyan Announces 23 Scholarships
At a dinner celebrating the philanthropy that provides financial aid to about nine in 10 Illinois Wesleyan students each year, scholarship recipients were able to meet and thank their benefactors.

Illinois Wesleyan, Chinese University Forge Scholarly Exchange
China's Beijing Union University and Illinois Wesleyan will exchange faculty and collaborate on scholarly research under a new agreement between the institutions.

• 4 p.m., CNS C101 -- Biology Seminar -- Prof. Mats Hansson of Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen, Denmark, a research collaborator with Chair and Associate Professor of Biology Dave Bollivar, will present "Barley mutants, gene hunting and concerns about global climate change in a large international enterprise."

8 p.m., Hansen Student Center -- Comedian Chad Daniels will entertain.

Saturday, Jan. 12

5 & 7 p.m., Shirk Center -- Women's and men's basketball vs. Carthage College. Watch streaming video.

• 7 p.m., Titan Room, Memorial Center -- Summer Enrichment Program Information Session -- Students are invited to come and learn more about the Summer Enrichment Program (SEP), which provides MALANA students with an opportunity to enjoy paid internships, free summer housing, learning opportunities and cultural activities. Sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.

• A poem by Janna Strain '13, "I'd Like to See You at Thanksgiving," has been published in the online journal The Morning News.

• Associate Professor of German and Eastern European Studies Sonja Fritzsche was elected in December to serve as a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL) for the term of January 2013 to January 2016.

• Two faculty members have been awarded new grants:

-- Professor of Educational Studies Irv Epstein was awarded a grant by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) and the Institute of International Education (IIE) to sponsor a workshop for undergraduate students who are pursuing independent research involving food security and conflict, post-conflict reconciliation and peace building.

-- Assistant Professor of Computer Science Mark Liffiton received a grant from Google, Inc. as part of the Google App Engine Education Awards program. Liffiton proposed to develop and run a simple classroom-response system on the Google App Engine infrastructure.

For the sixth year in a row, Illinois Wesleyan made Kiplinger's Personal Finance list of top 100 "best values" among private liberal arts colleges.

An "On Assignment" video features Assistant Professor of Biology Edgar Lehr and his discovery of new species in the Pui Pui Protected Forest in Peru.
