Dear Friends,

On Tuesday, August 20, I had the distinct privilege of welcoming 571 new students who arrived on campus to begin Turning Titan Orientation and register for classes. I spent most of the day greeting students and their parents and watching new roommates organize and reorganize the furniture in their rooms.

The number of new students is significantly larger than last fall and reflects several interesting characteristics:

• We have enrolled 79 students from 27 different states (up from 18 last year). This is the largest national enrollment in quite some time, an outcome at least partly the result of adding lacrosse as a varsity sport.

• Fifty-five members of the class have had a close family member or relative attend Illinois Wesleyan, and 71 students are the first generation in their family to go to college.

• For the second year in a row, over 100 new students have identified themselves as Multi-racial, African-, Latino-, Asian- or Native American, bringing total MALANA enrollment to 15% of the campus.

• There are 49 international students from 17 different countries (up from 12 last year). This total almost doubles the number enrolled last year and brings the total international student enrollment on campus to more than 100 for the first time.

• Included in the class are a state speech champion, a student whose great-great-grandfather graduated from IWU in 1895, a student who has completed ten marathons, and a student who is state champion in the discus throw and plays the cello!

 Dugout

These students are arriving at Wesleyan at a wonderful time, because of the many significant changes that have been made in recent years and over the past few months. The finishing touches have been made on State Farm Hall, which is now ready for the start of classes and is the new home for faculty from the departments of Business Administration and Economics. I mentioned to the new students at the First-Year Convocation that they would have to be patient with returning students and many alumni who will not be able to resist the urge to tell them what it was like to take classes in Shaw Hall! Also of note, the new student apartment complex for juniors and seniors, The Gates at Wesleyan, is filled to capacity. And, Sodexo, our food service provider, completed a major renovation of the Dugout including new menu choices, which I’m sure will make it even more popular than ever.

During “Move-In,” several parents commented that IWU’s financial aid package had made it possible for their son or daughter to enroll. Many of you helped support that need during the July 17 “All In For Wesleyan" challenge. Titan pride was on display on a grand scale as more than 2,500 alumni and friends contributed $480,000 for student scholarships in this special 24-hour appeal. On behalf of the University and all students who will benefit from gifts made that day, I extend my thanks for making July 17 such a rousing success and for making it possible for many students to call Illinois Wesleyan home.

You Did it!

Of those who contributed to the wildly successful "All In for Wesleyan" challenge on July 17, more than 1,000 (including 845 alumni) had already given during the fiscal year – doubling down to support the next generation of students.

In addition, 302 alumni, friends, faculty, staff, parents and current students went "all in" on that day to make their first gift ever to IWU. Learn more.
