Dear Friends,

Commencement is one of my favorite occasions and this year’s ceremony was especially meaningful for several important reasons.  First of all, I always enjoy handing diplomas to the graduating class, an important event made even more memorable by the fact that the Class of 2013 was the first to walk across the new Glenn and Rozanne P. Kemp Commencement Plaza at State Farm Hall.

Our Commencement speaker, Juan Salgado ‘91, president and CEO of Instituto del Progesso Latino in Chicago, delivered an inspiring address, challenging the graduates to: “Do what stirs your spirit and soul…you may not fully comprehend where you will end up, but I guarantee the journey will be rewarding, the pay – not always in dollars – will be immense, and the value of your Illinois Wesleyan education will become as priceless as mine has been.”  Honorary degrees were awarded to Juan and to Civil Rights icon Robert Parris Moses, founder and president of the Algebra project.

In addition to these two educators who received honorary degrees, teaching was celebrated during the ceremony through the recognition of Assistant Professor of Sociology Meghan Burke as the Student Senate Professor of the Year. In choosing this year’s honoree, the Student Senate received 180 nominations from students for more than 80 different professors, or roughly half of our faculty!

Finally, investitures were held for three new endowed professors: Professor of Mathematics Tian-Xiao He, named the new Earl and Marian A. Beling Professor of Natural Sciences; Political Science Professor William Munro was honored as the new Betty Ritchie-Birrer ’47 and Ivan Birrer Endowed Professor; and History Professor Michael B. Young was honored with the new Robert W. Harrington Professorship.

Commencement this year truly was a special day for Illinois Wesleyan, one that marked an important milestone for the graduates and celebrated the University’s key values.  Now, we turn our attention to preparations for welcoming new students this fall and starting their journey to Commencement 2017.

Alumni Join Board of Trustees

Five IWU alumni and a member of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference are among those named as new trustees or moved into new roles on the Board of Trustees, elected at the May 10 meeting.

Summer Reading: Outcasts United

Each summer we ask the incoming class to read the same book, while faculty, staff members, current students and alumni are invited to read along. Participating in the Summer Reading Program is a wonderful opportunity to introduce new students to our engaged campus community.

This year we are reading Outcasts United by Warren St. John. To complement the Summer Reading Program, Warren St. John himself will be the speaker for President's Convocation on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Throughout the 2013-14 academic year, themes from Outcasts United will be addressed in programming on campus. For more information, visit

We would like to extend the invitation to you, as members of the IWU community, to join us in reading Outcasts United. We'd love to hear your thoughts about the book on our Facebook page or on Twitter (#IWUunited).

If you're able, we're also seeking volunteers to co-facilitate discussion groups on campus during Turning Titan: New Student Orientation. Expectations of co-facilitators include reading and reflecting on Outcasts United, attending a pre-discussion planning session on Monday, Aug. 19, from 4-5 p.m., and co-facilitating a discussion on Wednesday, Aug. 21 from 6:30-8 p.m. If you wish to participate as a co-facilitator, please send a message to
