The creation of Hansen Student Center from historic Memorial Gymnasium, a campus landmark from the 1920s, was completed in January, 2002.
The 33,000-square-foot facility houses offices for Student Senate and student organizations, student conference rooms, the Campus Bookstore, Hattie's Cafe, Tommy's Grille and patio, and a convenience shop.
Spacious Center Court, displaying the original basketball floor, offers students a number of casual lounge/discussion areas that can quickly be converted into a forum for entertainment and special events.
A gift from Tom O. Hansen '82 and his family spearheaded the renovation project. IWU students played a significant role in planning the design and use of the student center, visiting other campuses and serving on the steering committee working with architects Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott of Boston.
