Illinois Wesleyan
Passion for Justice
A Solid Foundation
The top law schools in the nation aren't looking for students who major in criminal justice or legal studies, but rather concentrating in a specific area of study. Whether it be biology, business, music, or anything in between, there is no single undergraduate major that is ideal for all students considering law school. At Illinois Wesleyan, you’ll benefit from courses that require you to read challenging works, write papers demonstrating verbal organization of complicated materials, and develop your speaking skills.

Advocacy Minor
Advocacy Minor
While not a requirement, the Advocacy Minor offers a concentration in Pre-Law. For those wanting to show their interest of pre-law on transcripts, this shows as a minor in "Pre-Law Advocacy". The capstone course for the pre-law track is the Mock Trial course. During this course, students prepare their arguments and hold the trial at the McLean County Justice Center with Retired Judge Elizabeth Robb (a 1978 IWU graduate and former chief judge of the 11th Judicial Circuit of Illinois) presiding.

Through engaging in trial simulations in competition with teams from other institutions, students develop critical thinking and public speaking skills, as well as a knowledge of legal practices and procedures.

Ethics Bowl
The Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl (IEB) is a team competition that combines the excitement and fun of a competitive tournament with an innovative approach to education in practical and professional ethics.

“During most of my time at IWU, I was a psychology major. I had seriously considered going to grad school in some discipline of psychology, but then I took business law, which opened my eyes to what a fun and intellectually stimulating path law would be. From that point forward, I knew law school was coming next.”

The IWU Advantage
  • Our small classes and individual attention will help you develop reading, writing and critical thinking skills that are absolutely essential in successfully pursuing law school.

  • You'll have the flexibility to take courses that interest you where, as a result, you will be more successful – especially since law schools prioritize GPA over a particular course of study.

  • Members of the Pre-Law Advisory Committee will be available to talk with you about your course selections, law school options, applications, personal statements and any other questions about law school you might have.

  • IWU’s general education requirements are designed to help you explore a broad range of disciplines and develop enduring qualities of mind and character. A challenging liberal arts education is indisputably the best pre-law academic preparation that you can pursue.
