Jean Miller Hornberger ’44, Jack Hornberger ’44
Jack and I started at IWU in the Fall of 1940.We didn't actually meet until Feb.1941.
I lived with my grandmother on Market Street and Jack live at the Sigma Chi house
on Main Street. He used to see me walking to school in the morning and asked Annie
Baker to fix us up with a date. We started going steady that Spring and he gave me
his Sigma Chi pin at the midsummer party dance in 1941. The Fall of 1941 we had a
wonderful time, but Jack left school at the end of the 1st semester. Before he left
he gave me an engagement ring. He finished the school year at IU/Purdue Extension.
He was drafted into the Army in October 1942 and I came back to school for my Junior
Year. We were married Feb.18,1943. I stayed in school and he went overseas in December.
I said goodbye to him on my 21st birthday Nov. 01,1943, and didn't see him again until
Dec.1945. We have always had a special feeling for Illinois Wesleyan because it is
where we met and fell in love. We have had a happy life together. We have 4 children,5
grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. We will have been married 60 years this
coming Feb. and the flame is still the same. — Submitted by Jean Miller Hornberger
