Reading Teacher Endorsement

A reading teacher is one whose assignment involves teaching reading to students. The endorsement allows one to teach at the grade level of the professional educator license. The reading teacher endorsement shall not be issued alone as an individual's first teaching credential. The endorsement is added to your entitlement notification upon completion of the elementary or secondary program if you earn a grade of C or higher in all required coursework and pass the content test.

State law specifies the required distribution of coursework for the endorsement. Candidates must complete the 24 hours of coursework and pass the Reading Teacher content-area test (#177).

*Elementary candidates.  The equivalent of four credit hours of content area reading is addressed in Educ 320 and embedded within the four upper level elementary curriculum courses in social studies, mathematics, science, and fine arts or Educ 365 for secondary candidates. 

**Secondary candidates.  Content area reading is addressed in Educ 365 (four credit hours).
