Where is the Hart Career Center located?

The Hart Career Center is located on the second floor of the Minor Myers, jr. Welcome Center.

How do I schedule an appointment at the Hart Career Center?

Students may book an appointment online through their Handshake profile, call the office at 309-556-3071, or stop by the office on the second floor of the Minor Myers, jr. Welcome Center.

Where is the appointment function located in Handshake?

Select “Career Center” from the menu at the top of your profile and then select “Appointments.” From there you will be directed to “Schedule a New Appointment” and select an appointment type, date, time, and staff member

Can I access Handshake through the Illinois Wesleyan University App?

Yes, select the three line menu in the left corner and click on Handshake. This will automatically redirect you to the single sign on feature on the Handshake website.

Are there sample resumes that I can download?

Yes, there are sample resumes and many other helpful handouts located in the Handshake resource library. The Handshake resource library can be accessed by clicking on the “Career Center” tab at the top of the screen and selecting “Resources” from the drop down menu.

Can I do a practice interview before the real thing?

Yes! Practice Interviews are opportunities to go through an actual interview with an employer volunteering their time to help you develop your interviewing skills. Sign up for a practice interview through your Handshake account. You will need to have your Profile complete and a resume uploaded in Handshake. At that point, select “Jobs” and then “On Campus Interviews.” Choose a Practice Interview, select this and then apply with your uploaded resume. You will be taken to the schedule to choose a time slot. If there are no times available, the schedule is full. 

How early in my time at Illinois Wesleyan should I visit the Hart Career Center?

It is important to start visiting the Hart Career Center your first year. The career planning process takes time and there are many services that would assist first year students from career counseling and exploration, resume assistance, practice interviews, and more.  

Is there a Career Fair on campus?

Yes! Each year the Hart Career Center hosts a Fall Career Fair in late September or early October. The event brings to campus over 75 employers in a variety of career fields to share information about internships, full-time post-graduate employment opportunities, and volunteer opportunities. The event is held in the Shirk Center and details are available on the Hart Career Center website and in your Handshake account.   

Is it important for me to find an internship while at IWU?

It is vitally important that you gain experience in your field of study. Internships provide this experience. You can search for available opportunities through your Handshake account but it is recommended that you schedule a time to meet with a Hart Career Center staff member. Brian Richardson, Assistant Director for Career Engagement, coordinates our Internship Program.  

Can the Career Center help me if I am Pre-Health?

Students pursuing or planning to pursue a career in the healthcare field should realize that an early start is essential in these professional fields of study. It is recommended that students schedule an appointment with Michele Darnell, our Pre-Health and Biology Career Advisor, with any questions. You should also check out the Pre-Health website for information on specific career fields and requirements for study.
