While in his first year at Illinois Wesleyan, Michael Henry '12 founded the campus chapter of FACE AIDS, which works to fight HIV/AIDS around the globe. He is now one of seven students from across the nation serving on the organization's Student Steering Committee.

Your hometown?

Teutopolis, Illinois. Home of the Wooden Shoes! It’s a small town of about 1,600 people about 2 hours south of Bloomington.

Why Wesleyan?

When I visited, I loved the campus and felt really comfortable here. I knew I would be challenged academically and believed that having close relationships with my professors and my fellow students would really enhance my education and personal development.

Your major?

Biology

Favorite professor or class?

My favorite class was Medical Ethics with Dr. Charlotte Brown. It really challenged the assumptions I held regarding issues such as physician-assisted suicide, euthanasia, and abortion.

I really respect Dr. Bollivar as a professor and as my advisor. We always can have a good laugh joking around with each other.

After Wesleyan?

I plan on attending medical school and becoming a doctor. Maybe one day I’ll get my own TV show like Dr. Oz, but I guess I should take it one step at a time.

Biggest thrill or best memory?

Going to the FACE AIDS National Conference each year at Stanford University. I love exchanging ideas with other chapter leaders from across the country, and I always leave with a great feeling of solidarity.  My freshman year we talked with founder of Partners in Health Dr. Paul Farmer about the importance of a student-led grassroots movement to improve global health. It’s a great feeling to be a part of that.

For fun?

Beating my friends in board games like Cranium and Scattergories. I also love to play golf and go to the movies.

The best?

Orange chicken at Great Wall on College Avenue. Some (like Dr. Harper) prefer General Tso’s, but you can’t go wrong with either, really.

Favorite book?

The Rhythm of Life: Living Every Day with Passion and Purpose by Matthew Kelly. I’m a huge nerd when it comes to motivational/inspirational books.

Favorite band?

It’s too hard to pick just one.  My favorites include Death Cab for Cutie, Jason Mraz, Rascal Flatts, and John Mayer. I’m also secretly big into show tunes. Wicked is probably my favorite soundtrack.

Favorite movie?

Inception just took my number one spot away from The Shawshank Redemption. You should see them both.

Favorite quote?

“What you do speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
