Illinois Wesleyan Senior Named Lincoln Laureate

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — An Illinois Wesleyan University senior is one of 49 college students to be recognized for excellence by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois.

Alexander Laurie of Lebanon, Ill., is the recipient of the award, which honors an outstanding senior from each of the four-year degree granting institutions of higher learning in Illinois.

Gov. George Ryan, President of the Lincoln Academy, will present Laurie with a Lincoln Academy Medallion and a check for $150 in recognition of his outstanding achievement at the Award ceremony in Springfield on Saturday, November 2. The events include the Student Laureate Presentation Ceremony in the House of Representatives Chamber of the Old State Capitol and a reception and luncheon in the Governor's Executive Mansion.

A graduate of Lebanon High School, Laurie has a 3.97 grade-point average as a physics and mathematics major at IWU. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi academic honor societies and the Pi Mu Epsilon mathematics honor society.

He is co-author of an article, "Role of 'Vision' in Neighborhood Racial Segregation: A Variant of the Schelling Segregation Model", is currently under review at the journal Urban Studies. In the 2001 John Wesley Powell Research Conference he made a presentation on "Medium-Mediated Interactions Involving Suspended Particles."

Also at Illinois Wesleyan, Laurie has been named an Anderson Scholar, a Presidential Scholar and has served as an officer of the Society of Physics Students and as a section leader for the University Choir.

Student Laureates are honored for their overall excellence in curricular and co-curricular activities. The student must have a cumulative and major GPA of not less than 3.00.
