Spinning® Classes*

Fort Natatorium Classroom

Spinning is the original indoor cycling program that combines a foundation of basic cycling movements with motivational instruction techniques, breathing awareness and great overall conditioning. The activity is non-impact, individually paced cardiovascular exercise. Inspirational music and non-competitive environment ensure a fun, effective experience for participants of all fitness levels.

Step

Wednesday • 4:45-5:45
CNS Dance Studio B

This 60-minute action packed step class will keep you going with great movement patterns. Modifications are offered to accommodate all levels of experience. End the class with core exercises and stretching.

Low Impact

Tuesday/Thursday 4:40-5:10pm

Get ready for 30 minutes of fun music and great moves! This low impact aerobics class will keep you moving with a progression of movements that are energizing and fun.

Strength & Stretch (S&S)

Thursday 5:10-5:40pm
CNS Dance Studio B

This choreography-free class incorporates exercises to improve strength of the major muscle groups. Instructors will develop stations of exercise using resistive tubing,balls, handweights and much more. The class will finish with a progressive stretch of the muscles just worked.

Pilates

Tuesday/ Thursday 12:15 - 12:45 p.m.
CNS Dance Studio

Come invigorate your mind, strengthen your core, and condition your body using the principles of Pilates. Pilates teaches body awareness & good posture while increasing core strength, flexibilty, & agility. Tuesdays class will focus on classic mat Pilates using stability balls and hand weights to tone arms, legs and upper back as well as the core. Thursday's class will take you through everything you need to achieve a fit and healthy body, from core strength to overall body conditioning and stretching

Ball Pilates

Thursday 5:10-5:40pm

This Class takes the principles and movements of Pilates, and applies them to the stabilitiy ball, adding a fun and challenging twist. Ball Pilates will stengthen you core, improve your balance and coordination and increase your body awareness.



Deep Water Workout

Get ready to make some waves in this deep water aquatics class. Formally, Immersed in Water, but with a new format. A lot of the same movements - just put together in a new way to keep you moving in many directions. Floatation belts are available, plus we will be using additional aquatic equipment to strengthen and stretch various muscle groups.

Wee Swim

Wednesday 6:00- 6:4530 p.m.
Fort Natatorium Pool
Spring Session: April 4 - May 9

This class is for the parent(s) and child (6 mo.-3 yrs.) who want to explore the wonders of the water together. Activities include blowing bubbles, kicking, singing, and playing with bath toys. The purpose of this class is to provide encouragement and offer a positive water experience for the little ones in a relaxed, fun environment.

Tai Chi (Yang Long Form)

Saturday 9:00-10:00 a.m.
Shirk Activity Center or Quad

Tai Chi is a blend of exercise, meditation and self-defense. Take the opportunity to explore the gentle flowing movement of Tai Chi.

Tae Kwon Do

Shirk Activity Center

Tae kown Do is becoming a popular sport in the U.S. Come and enjoy this Korean martial art form and exercise. All ages and skill levels are welcome.

Yoga I The Basics

Monday/ Wednesday: 5:00-6:00pm
Shirk South Classroom

The journey that is yoga begins with this class as you learn or review basic asanas (postures), practice breath work and meditation in a relaxing environment while building strength, increasing flexibility, and improving balance. This gentle class will be tailored to meet the needs of the individual yogis.

Yoga II Beyond the Basics

Tuesday- Thursday: 5:15-6:15pm
CNS Dance Studio A

Step up the intensity a bit! In this gentle intermediate-level class we will practice the postures in a flowing style known as Vinyasa. The class will work with some finer points of alignment and practice holding the postures a bit longer to develop strength and focus. This class will encourage self-exploration through yoga asanas, breathing, relaxation, and meditation.

Functional Strength Training

Monday/Wednesday/ Friday 12:15-12:45 p.m.
Shirk Practice Gym

This class will introduce the concept of functional training and teach exercises that will not only increase muscular strength and endurance, but also improve balance, agility, and stamina by mimicking everyday movement patterns. Various training systems and modalities including resistive tubing and free weights will be explored while emphasizing safety through proper execution.

Social Dance

Monday 6:00-7:00 p.m
CNS Dance Studio
4 week Session: May Term---May 7-28

Everyone can learn to dance. You will learn basic rhythm skills, walk swing, cha cha, fox trot, jitter bug and a little bit of salsa. This class will leave you ready to go out and "cut a rug", but will not prepare you to compete in "Dancing with the Stars." By the end of this eight week session you will have a better grasp of some basic and essential social dance skills.

Salsa

Join us for some spicy summer dancing! Salsais a fusion of informal dance styles with roots in the Caribbean(especially in Cuba Puerto Rico, and the United States), Latin and North America. The dance originated in Cuba through the mixture of Mambo, Danzon, Guaguanco, Cuban Son, and other typical Cuban dance forms. We will be dancing to sultry Salsa rhythms that will pair nicely with the summer heat!

Parent/Child Yoga

What is your body saying? Does it need to twist? Does it need to balance? Learn to listen to the body with your child(ren) through the basics of asana (yoga postures). Instruction in the practice of bady awareness through basic yoga poses (such as cat/cow, puppy dog, tree, cobra) to increase strength, flexibility, balance, and concentration, and boost the immune system.

ZUMBA

ZUMBA is a fun Latin inspired, dance fitness class that is taking the world by storm! The class incorporates exciting and unique Latin moves and rhythms into an effective fitness system. ZUMBA allows you to dance your way to a fitter you in a friendly party like atmosphere!

Basic Hoop Dance Fitness

Basic hula hooping has come a long way since the original WAMO toy! With adult size hula hoops you are able to work on coordination, full body toning, joint mobilization and flexibility, while getting a high cardio workout at the same time. Hoop dance has become extremely popular because of the fun and playfulness it brings to a workout. It's just more fun to smile while you sweat! Limited number of spaces, so be sure to register! Natural fibers are best to wear while hooping. Hoops are provided.

Beginning Hatha Yoga

. This beginning class focuses on using the breath in combination with the yoga postures (asanas) to allow the body to open and start to release tension, tightness and stress. This class will encourage development of strength, balance, co-ordination and flexibility of the body, mind and spirit. Please register in the Wellness Office, 556-3334 or wellness@iwu.edu.

Cardio Kickboxing

Cardio kickboxing combines aerobics, boxing and martial arts into an exciting, dynamic workout intended to enhance cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance and self-confidence. Modifications are offered so that an individual at any fitness level can participate in the class.
