Finding Music Materials through Illinet
Online
Find printed or recorded music at The Ames Library through Illinet Online, the library’s online catalog. If our library does not own the item you need, or if it is checked out, Illinet Online allows you to request a copy from another ILCSO member library.
Find music of a Composer or Performer
Use Browse Author search to locate music by a specific composer or performer. Enter last name followed by first name. Spelling and spacing are important; punctuation and capitalization are not necessary. Use truncation symbol “?” if you are uncertain of full name or spelling:

Browse Prolific Author/Composer will retrieve a list of headings to works by composers with extensive works lists. Click on a link to retrieve a list of titles:

Use Start of Title “keyword” search to find musical compositions with distinctive titles. Limit results of keyword searches to specific material types with Quick Limit option:

Use Browse Subject search to find music in a specific genre or form, type of music, or instrumentation, e.g., Symphonies, Jazz, or Violin and piano music:

Note: Subject headings used for music in Illinet Online are taken from the Library of Congress Subject Headings, located in Ref. Z695.Z8L524 2001.
Use Boolean Search to combine “keyword” search terms. Boolean operators AND, OR, NOT, allow you to narrow or broaden your search:

Use the Guided Keyword Search to construct Author/Title searches or combine keywords using AND, OR, NOT. Guided Keyword Searches allow you to specify where you wish to look for search terms, e.g., author, title, subject, publisher, etc. Guided Keyword searches can also be limited to specific types of material, language, or date of publication.

Important Note: Guided Keyword searches are recommended when searching for music genre titles (e.g., symphonies, concertos, songs), for the musical works/recordings of prolific composers/performers, or for individual compositions which may appear in numerous editions, arrangements or translations.
